"Mister Tulkinghorn: Inspired by Charles Dickens's 'Bleak House' by Bethany Alley **All quotations taken from Dickens's novel**" The Parlor is a room. "You are standing in the Parlor of Sir and Lady Dedlock's home, Chesney Wold, on Chancery Lane. 'With so much of itself abandoned to darkness and vacancy; with so little change under the summer shining or the wintry lowering; so sombre and motionless always . . . ; passion and pride, even to the stranger’s eye, have died away from the place in Lincolnshire, and yielded it to dull repose.' You have just come from yet another hearing for the Jarndyce and Jarndyce Chancery case. A filthy boy who you bumped into on the way here told you that there is new information regarding the case that might help you, but you were late for your meeting with Sir Leicaster Dedlock and could not chat. He shouted something about papers as you were rushing away, but his meaning was unclear. You decide to look for this boy as soon as you are able." The Sitting Room is north of the Parlor. "This cozy sitting room is the Lady's favorite room in the house. She is often found here looking out with window with her usual look of boredom." In the Sitting Room is a framed picture and a table. On the table is a cup of tea, a silver key and a Page One. The description of the tea is "The tea is cold - better not drink it." The description of the key is "A silver key." Instead of taking the tea, say "Best to leave it here." The silver key unlocks the wooden box. The description of Page One is "Page One of the Jarndyce and Jarndyce document." After taking the Page One when the Page One is not handled: increase the score by 1. Instead of taking picture, say "A bit odd to take this picture, don't you think?" The description of the framed picture is "The picture is of Lady Dedlock. 'She has a fine face - originally of a character that would be rather called very pretty than handsome, but improved classicality by the acquired expression of her fashionable state. Her figure is elegant, and has the effect of being tall. In condemnation of her hair especially, she is the best-groomed woman in the whole stud.'" After examining the picture, say "You were hoping to chat with Lady Dedlock, but she does not seem to be home." The Sir Leicaster Dedlock's Office is west of the Parlor. "You thought you had a meeting with Sir Leicaster but he does not seem to be home. You decide to look around the office." In the office is a desk. On the desk is a wooden box and a journal. The journal is a thing. The description of the journal is "Sir Leicaster Dedlock's Journal." After examining the journal, say "It reads: 'Jarndyce and Jarndyce drones on. This scarecrow of a suit has, in course of time, become so complicated, that no man alive knows what it means. Scores of people have deliriously found themselves made parties in Jarndyce and Jarndyce, without knowing how or why. Jarndyce and Jarndyce has passed into a joke.'" The wooden box is a container. The container is lockable and locked. Inside the wooden box is a Page Two. After taking the Page Two when the Page Two is not handled: increase the score by 1. The desk is fixed in place. The wooden box is fixed in place. The Front Door is south of the Parlor and north of the Ghost Walk. The description of the Ghost Walk is "'There is fog everywhere. Fog up the river, where it flows among green aits and meadows; fog down the river, where it rolls defiled among the tiers of shipping, and the waterside pollutions of a great (and dirty) city... fog in the afternoon pipe of the wrathful skipper... fog cruelly pinching the toes and fingers of his shivering apprentice boy on deck.'" The Front Door is a door. In the Ghost Walk is a muddy path. The muddy path is fixed in place. The description of the muddy path is "This path leads to the Outskirts of Chancery Lane - the poorest part of town." The Outskirts of Chancery Lane is east of the Ghost Walk. "The poorest part of town." The Wooden Door is east of the Outskirts of Chancery Lane and west of the Krook's Shop. The Wooden Door is a door. The Wooden Door is lockable and locked. The Tom-All-Alone's is north of the Outskirts of Chancery Lane. "'Tom-All-Alone's is a black, dilapitated street, avoided by all decent people; where the crazy houses were seized upon, when their decay was far advanced, by some bold vagrants, who, after establishing their own possession, took to letting them out in lodgings. Now, these tumbling tenements contain, by night, a swarm of misery. As, on the ruined human wretch, vermin parasites appear, so, these ruined shelters have bred a crowd of foul existence that crawls in and out of gaps in walls and boards; and coils itself to sleep...fetching and carrying fever.'" In the Tom-All-Alone's is a boy and a small sack. The description of the boy is "This is the same filthy boy you saw earlier. He is asleep on the street using his small sack as a pillow. It is best not to wake him." After examining the boy, say "It would be wrong to bother him ... he looks very sick." The boy is fixed in place. The sack is an openable container. The sack is not locked. The sack is closed. In the sack is the Page Three and a brass key. After taking the Page Three when the Page Three is not handled: increase score by 1. The brass key unlocks the wooden door. In Krook's Shop is a bed, a candle, and a bookshelf. "'It is dim enough, with a blot-headed candle or so in the windows, and a cat sitting in the back part by the fire. There is a bed against the far wall and it appears that there may be someone in it.'" On the bookshelf is a chest. The chest is an openable container. The chest is not locked. The chest is closed. In the chest is Page Four. After taking Page Four when the Page Four is not handled: increase score by 1. The bookshelf is fixed in place. The bed is fixed in place. The description of the candle is "This candle has been burning for a long time." Instead of taking the candle, say "Putting a candle in your pocket would be a bad idea." After examining the bed, say "As you look more closely at the man in the bed, you realize that he is dead. It appears to be an Opium overdose, but was it on purpose? And who is this man?" After taking Page Four: say "You have found all four pages of the document! But you suddenly do not feel so well... After a sudden and mysterious explosion, you spontaneously combust! THE END."; end the story.
