"October 17th" Include Exit Lister by Eric Eve. When play begins: say "When you come home, the door is locked for whatever reason. You can hear sounds inside, but you have no idea what's going on. Quite the downer on your birthday, no? Ah well, it would be a good time to run a few errands while you're mysteriously locked out. What do you have on you again?"; now the time of day is 4:30 PM. The player carries a bit of cash, a shopping list, and a signed envelope. The description of a bit of cash is "just enough to get all the stuff on the grocery list." The description of the shopping list is "It asks for a carton of eggs, a pack of ramen, a carton of milk... and a box of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies. Huh." The description of the signed envelope is "It has the name of an artist on it. You can usually find her sketching boats at the dock." The Apartment Hallway is a room. "You are in the hallway in front of your apartment (with the door being north, for reference). Not much, really. Sometimes the pattern on the carpet looks mildly interesting, but not today. Going west reveals the stairwell leading to the ground floor." West of the Apartment Hallway is the Top of the Stairwell. A locked lockable closed door called Home Door is north of the Apartment Hallway and south of Apartment Living Room. Every turn when the player is in the Apartment Hallway: if the Time Remaining is 2: now the Home Door is unlocked. The Apartment Living Room is a room. "Home at last!" Special someone is a person in the Apartment Living Room. "A young woman comes in from the kitchen, with some grease on her hands, and looks to you with a small smile." Special someone carries a birthday cake. The birthday cake is edible. The cupboard is a closed container in the Apartment Living Room. The description of the birthday cake is "A lovely home-made cake." Time remaining is a number that varies. Time remaining is 0. The Top of the Stairwell is a room. "The top of some rickety old stairs with the door back into the hall being east. You can go down to the ground floor from here." Below the Top of the Stairwell is the Bottom of the Stairwell. The Bottom of the Stairwell is a room. "The bottom of some rickety old stairs. Going further west takes you onto the street." West of the Bottom of the Stairwell is Main Street. Main Street is a room. "The bustling street is still noisy and talkative at [time of day]. [if the time of day is less than 5:00 PM]People are still coming back from work at this hour.[end if] The grocery store is accessible going north, with a view of the docks being visible from the south side." North of Main Street is the Grocery Store Front. South of Main Street is the Dock View. The Grocery Store Front is a room. "For some reason, you remember the entrance is east relative to the street." A door called the Grocery Store Entrance is east of the Grocery Store Front and west of the Interior Grocery Store. The Coffer is a container in the Interior Grocery Store. A receipt, a carton of eggs, a pack of ramen, a carton of milk, and a box of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies are things in the Coffer. The description of a carton of eggs is "A simple staple product that was asked for." The description of a pack of ramen is "Cheap, tastes cheap, but reliable." The description of a carton of milk is "Another simple staple of baking and cookery." The description of a box of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies is "Whoever wrote this grocery list was clearly craving these cookies." The description of the receipt is "A record of what you got at the grocery store." Instead of going through the Grocery Store Entrance: if the player does not have the receipt: move a bit of cash to the Coffer; move a carton of eggs to the player; move a pack of ramen to the player; move a carton of milk to the player; move a box of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies to the player; move the receipt to the player; increment the Time remaining; say "You go in, and do your shopping. You know the drill. Now you are back outside."; otherwise: say "You've already been here haven't you?" instead. The Dock View is a room. "From the edge of the water, you can see large ferry ships hauling people to and from the islands on the lake." The Artist is a person in the Dock View. "A woman sits on a bench looking out over the water, sketching something. Seems like the artist you're looking for." Understand "woman" or "sketching woman" or "sketching" as the Artist. The Artist carries a folded up sketch. The description of the folded up sketch is "A sketch of a couple waving from a ferry. It brings back fond memories." Instead of asking the Artist about "envelope": say "The Artist nods. Indeed, she is expecting mail from someone."; Instead of giving signed envelope to the Artist: say "The artist smiles, and accepts the envelope. In exchange, she gives you a folded up paper containing a sketch of a couple waving from a departing ferry."; move the signed envelope to the Artist; move the folded up sketch to the player; increment the Time Remaining. Birthday Celebration is a scene. Birthday Celebration begins when the player is in the Apartment Living Room for the first turn. When Birthday Celebration begins: say " She looks up at you and says 'Sorry, honey. I got caught up and needed some time.' Turns out she baked a cake for your birthday. Nice and all, but worth getting locked out for? Maybe... maybe. After stocking the groceries in the cupboard, you show her the sketch you got from the artist along with her box of cookies, to her delight. In return, she brings you a piece of cake on a plate, with a smile."; move the birthday cake to the player; move the folded up sketch to Special someone; move the box of white chocolate macadamia nut cookies to Special someone; move the receipt to the cupboard; move a carton of milk to the cupboard; move a pack of ramen to the cupboard; move a carton of eggs to the cupboard; move the shopping list to Special someone; After eating the birthday cake: end the story finally saying "Biting into the cake, you have a feeling it's only going to be uphill from here."
