When play begins, say "[banner text][line break] The soft strands of pure grass rustle against your arm in the soft breeze. The towering trees are rather foreboding, and give off a great deal of shade. The sun looks as if it has just risen. If you don't eat soon, you fear you will succumb to starvation." The display banner rule is not listed in the startup rulebook. Food is a kind of thing. Food is usually edible. Food has a time called the satisfaction period. The satisfaction period of a food is usually 5 minutes. A person can be hungry or replete. The player is hungry. The Larder contains an apple, a candy bar, and a large plate of pasta. The apple, the candy bar, and the pasta are food. The satisfaction period of the apple is 2 minutes. The satisfaction period of the pasta is 125 minutes. Check eating something which is not food: say "[The noun] might be edible, but it's not what you'd consider really food." Check eating something when the player is not hungry: say "You're not hungry right now." Carry out eating something: now the player is replete; hunger resumes in the satisfaction period of the noun from now. At the time when hunger resumes: starvation occurs in three minutes from now; now the player is hungry. At the time when starvation occurs: if the player is hungry, end the story saying "You have starved." Every turn when the player is hungry: choose a random row in the Table of Hunger Complaints; say "[hunger entry][paragraph break]". Table of Hunger Complaints hunger "Gosh, you're starving." "It feels as though you haven't eaten in days. Weeks, almost." "The world seems to slow down and everything becomes sharper and brighter. You are a hunter, a hunter of foodstuffs." "You find yourself staring at [the random visible thing that is not the player] and wondering how it would taste." The player is wearing Ragged Loincloth. After taking off Ragged Loincloth, say "Really, you had to do that?" After eating Ragged Loincloth: end the story saying "......................." Ragged Loincloth is edible Quiet Clearing is a room. The Description of Quiet Clearing is "A peaceful clearing, with long, green strands of grass, surrounded by a dark and foreboding forest, with shadows fading away into the shimmering sunlight. Elegant wisps of cloud cascade over the plentiful clearing. To the North, a small stream flows, cutting through a forest of Sycamore trees. To the Northeast lies an enormous Oak tree, with faded lines etched into it. Westward, a small game trail wends its way deeper into the forest. The trail looks as if you cannot explore it. Even farther East into the woods, a wider trail goes, towards the fresh sounds of the salty ocean, large cedar trees lining it. You can see a faded piece of tattered parchment, tied to a small branch. A small, Pink and blossoming cherry tree stands only feet from you. It can't be more than a few years old. It's beautiful flower petals remind you of a quiet morning, in rural Japan. As your eyes peer to the Northwest, a massive, tree stands, it's roots coming out of the rugged, earthy ground. A spiritual sensation comes across you, as you swear you can hear a faint but beautiful melody, fading away in the shadows of the tree." Sacred Tree is a room. Sacred Tree is northwest of Quiet Clearing. The Description of Sacred Tree is "" Naughty Dwarf is a person. Naughty Dwarf is in Flowing Stream. Naughty Dwarf is carrying Engraved Hammer. The Description of Engraved Hammer is "A large, but carefully crafted Hammer hangs at the dwarf's side. Mysterious Symbols line the Hammer's handle. A powerful glow emits itself from the large, stone mallet. Attached to the dwarf's leather waist-belt, you long to own the hammer." Instead of going southeast when the player is in Sacred Tree, say "As the Spiritual Sensation draws you closer, you find yourself unable to go back." Cherry Tree is in Quiet Clearing. Cherry Tree is a Supporter. Gleaming Fruit is on Cherry Tree. Gleaming Fruit is edible. Wide Trail is a room. Wide Trail is east of Quiet Clearing. The Description of Wide Trail is "As you proceed Northward, and draw ever-closer to the roaring ocean, the wide trail begins to open up, revealing large pieces of driftwood, and long, sand dunes. One by one, the elderly Cedar trees begin to clear, and you breath in the crisp, salty, air. A small gust of wind noiselessly blows in the background, slightly shifting the dunes of sea grass. In a particularly old cedar tree, a kind of fruit hangs, maybe you could eat it " Cedar Tree is a supporter in Wide Trail. Aqua-Blue Fruit is edible. Aqua-Blue Fruit is on Cedar Tree. Salty Ocean is a room. Salty Ocean is north of Wide Trail. Rock is an object. Rock is in Dark Corridor. Shadow Spirit is a person. Shadow Spirit is in Dark Corridor. Graceful Elk is an animal in Quiet Clearing. The Description of Graceful Elk is "Standing peacefully, a few feet away from you, a beautiful, Amber Elk, nipping away slowly at a dense holly bush. Two wooden-brown Antlers rest atop the animal's sleek head. On the animal's right antler, a small S is engraved, which could not have occurred naturally, If you squint carefully, you can make out a small piece of Tattered Parchment, with mysterious symbols engraved in it." Tattered Parchment is in Quiet Clearing. The Description of Tattered Parchment is "The strange parchment contains intricate symbols. However, you might be able to decipher it, if only you had something to help." Small Game Trail is scenery in Quiet Clearing. Wise Oak is a room. Wise Oak Tree is northeast of Quiet Clearing. The Description of Wise Oak is "A massive Oak tree, atop a rather steep hill. Unreadable lines are etched into the tree. A small Owl appears to sit on a branch, cloaked in darkness. A small hole seems to burrow under the tree. In front of you, a small, red maple stands, shimmering golden fruit hanging limply at it's sides." Red Maple is a supporter. Red Maple is in Wise Oak. Shimmering Golden Mango is on Red Maple. Shimmering Golden Mango is edible. Small Hole is a door. Small Hole is below Wise Oak Tree and above Dark Corridor. Dark Corridor is a room. The Description of Dark Corridor is "You can barely make out anything in the long shadows. There is a stream of light coming from the western side of Dark Corridor." Wall, Ceiling, Floor, and Shadows are Backdrops in Dark Corridor. Peaceful Grove is a room. Peaceful Grove is west of Dark Corridor. The Description of Peaceful Grove is "[if unvisited]Brilliant green leaves shine majestically in the fading sunlight. A small, stone pedestal sits atop a patch of lush grass. You see a small and wooden slab, resting upon the fading stone.[instead] You peer over the familiar grove, you recognize the long, silky strands of grass, and the long, Stone Pedestal. " Woodland Sprite is a person Woodland Sprite is in Peaceful Grove The Description of Woodland Sprite is "The mysterious Sprite exams you curiously, with an air of fear. Strung to the Sprite's back is an elegantly crafted bow, with the letter S engraved into the back. Scrambling up onto the nearest rock, the sprite sits peacefully. Somehow, you feel relaxed in his presence, a shining, wooden key hangs upon his oak waist-strap. A small, gleaming dagger hangs at his belt." Instead of examining the player: end the story saying "Why........." Instead of attacking Woodland Sprite: end the story saying "Faster than air, the Sprite draws his carved bow, and shoots an arrow. With a satisfying Clank, the arrow pierces your thick, woolen cloths, you regret your decision as you slowly drift into unconsciousness." Great Owl is a person in Wise Oak Tree. Great Owl wears Elder Scroll. The Description of Great Owl is "The animal's snow-white feathers run across it's spine. The few black feathers make out the letter W, upon the owl's forehead. As it quickly fly's in circles around the impressive oak tree, you can see a brown, hay strewn satchel, in which lies a small, scroll, engraved with mysterious symbols, unknown to you. Every so often, the Owl shrieks, which sends a tremor through all of the forest." Wooden Slab is in Peaceful Grove. Flowing Stream is a room. Flowing Stream is north of Quiet Clearing. The Description of Flowing Stream is "A shallow stream, flowing deeper into the woods. I misshapen maple log runs across the narrow river. Two piercing amber eyes stare intently out of a small bramble bush. You begin to become wary of the unfamiliar surroundings. A small shaft of sunlight barely makes it's way through the thick undergrowth of the forest. A small, amber locket rests peaceful, placed upon a a faded tree trunk. To the South East, a roaring but peaceful waterfall crashes against the small stream's ragged stones. " Roaring Waterfall is a room. Roaring Waterfall is southeast of Flowing Stream. The Description of Roaring Waterfall is "As a snow-blue blue jay flutters around the waterfall, it's serene whistle echoes beautifully, filling your body with pure energy. Somehow you can make out a faded U in the bird's startling blue feathers. " Instead of going northwest when the player is in Roaring Waterfall, say "As you begin to scramble to the rocks, you begin to feel stuck, and realize that you are encased in the clearing around the waterfall." Blue Jay is a person in Roaring Waterfall Maple Log is a door Maple Log is above Flowing Stream, and below Bamboo Grove. Bamboo Grove is a room The Description of Bamboo Grove is "A serene hollow, a gleaming pond gleaming in the background. Long stalks of bamboo cover the ground for as far as you can see. The long bamboo stalks cast long, singular shadows, in a mesmerizing pattern of shades." Sickly Mushroom is in Bamboo Grove. The Description of Sickly Mushroom is "It look edible, although eating it may not be wise." The Sickly Mushroom is edible. After eating the mushroom: say "As the strange mushroom goes down your throat, you begin to regret your decision, as you drift into unconsciousness."; end the game in death . Amber Locket is in Flowing Stream. Instead of taking Amber Locket: say "You somehow recognize the locket, although you can't place it in your memory."; move Amber Locket to player; increase score by 1. Outdoors is a region. Quiet Clearing, Flowing Stream, and Wise Oak Tree are in Outdoors. Sky, trees, river, grass, sun, and ground are backdrops in Outdoors. Understand "river" as stream. Understand "Ground" as Grass Death is a room. Instead of throwing Wooden Slab at Woodland Sprite: say "Wow. Good Job. You killed the Woodland Sprite. Wow. Just Wow."; move Woodland Sprite to DEATH; decrease score by 1. Instead of asking Woodland Sprite about something: say "Hello, I am Naudrauder III, Prince of the woodland Sprites and Folynas grove. If you can find my prized parchment, I may be of assistance to you. You see for years, my domain has been threatened by Valkor, King of the shadows. As darkness grows, my father's forest weakens. The parchment contains the vital steps for our victory. If you can find it, I urge you to give it to me, before its too late." Instead of giving Tattered Parchment to Woodland Sprite: say "I knew you wouldn't be able to... You have it! I cannot thank you enough for your kind deed to our kingdom. If it would please you, I can take you to my kingdom, where we will, feast, and witness the destruction of Valkor's kingdom. Proceed north-ward, through the Stone Ark, and I shall show you the kingdom of FØlynas. "; Increase score by 1. Serene Courtyard is a room. Stone Ark is a door. Stone Ark is above Peaceful Grove and below Serene Courtyard. The Description of Serene Courtyard is "You halt in your steps, as you survey the landscape. Beside you, Naudrauder stands proudly, surveying the kingdom that is soon to be his. Ivy-covered stone walls line the courtyard, a majestic, stone fountain in the center. An odd variety of plant and flower species, of all shapes, sizes, and scents line the walls, giving off a splendid masterpiece. As the fading sunlight shimmers across the Courtyard, your eyes adjust. Standing tall, a large manor, carefully lined with ancient stone lies in past the courtyard. A pair of engraved, oak doors rest in the center. " Instead of throwing rock at Shadow Spirit: say "As you throw the rock through the air, it comes down onto the spirit and slices through its forehead splattering blood through the air and a shrill screaming sound pierces the air. The Shadow Spirit is dead."; move Shadow Spirit to DEATH.
