"Pirate Adventure" by Jane McGregor The Pirate Ship is a room. "[if unvisited]You are docked on a secret island with a very special type of treasure on it. The only problem: you are not a pirate and this is not your ship. Find the items you'll need before completing your mission. Above you is the Bird's Nest. Below you is Below Deck. East is the Stern. West is the Bow. North is the Front Deck. South is the Plank.[otherwise if the black ball is carried]With the tremendous weight of the Black Ball dragging you down, you struggle up the steps. As you return to the Main Deck, sweating and gasping for breath, you look around at the tall Bird's Nest and the unstable plank. Perhaps it would be best to leave the Black Ball somewhere while you explore further! Above you is the Bird's Nest. Below you is Below Deck. East is the Stern. West is the Bow. North is the Front Deck. South is the Plank. [otherwise]You return the the Main Deck. You notice the evening sun is beginning to hang low on the horizon. Your quarry will be returning soon. Above you is the Bird's Nest. Below you is Below Deck. East is the Stern. West is the Bow. North is the Front Deck. South is the Plank." The Bird's Nest is a room. The Bird's Nest is up from the Pirate Ship. "[if unvisited]You climb up to the Bird's Nest. A thick, stormy wind sweeps through your hair and rattles your clothing, making you grip the railing. It's startling to be so high up, but you're amazed by the dark ocean surrounding you and your beautiful island below. It isn't often you get to see your home from this perspective.[otherwise]You climb up to the Bird's Nest again. You already found what you need here, but you take a moment to enjoy the inky darkness of the ocean beyond as nightfall approaches. Perhaps once your mission is complete, this ship could be yours?" Instead of going to the Bird's Nest when the player carries the Black Ball: say "You are not strong enough to carry the Black Ball all the way up there!" Instead of jumping in the Bird's Nest: say "What a terrible idea! If you crave to jump to your death, perhaps try the Plank." The Box of Matches is an object. The Box of Matches can be lit or unlit. The Box of Matches is in the Bird's Nest. "A box of matches rests on the railing beside your hand." The description of the Box of Matches is "There's only a few matches left. Make them count!" The Below Deck is a room. The Below Deck is down from the Pirate Ship. "[if unvisited]You hurry down the ladder to the bottom of the ship. Shattered alcohol bottles, dirty laundry, and a foul-smelling bucket of suspicious liquid consume your vision. It is such a shocking mess that you almost miss what you're looking for.[otherwise]Unfortunately, you return to the bottom of the ship. The same horrible stench of human waste and ancient body odor oppresses your nostrils. You are so relieved you have already picked up what you needed here." The Black Ball is an object. The Black Ball is in the Below Deck. "In the nearest corner, a Black Ball is tucked away on a pile of moldy blankets." The description of the Black Ball is "It is a very heavy ball that is big enough to bowl with. You don't have time for bowling." The dirty laundry is a thing. The dirty laundry is in the Below Deck. The dirty laundry is scenery. The description of the dirty laundry is "You don't know what came over you, but you find yourself compelled to inspect the pirate's soiled underwear and filthy socks. The rancid smell drifting from every article of clothing is enough to make you wish you could jump from the Bird's Nest." The Plank is a room. The Plank is south from the Pirate Ship. "[if unvisited]A long wooden board stretches over the black ocean. Carefully, you step onto the sagging plank. It groans dangerously beneath your weight, but you are just barely light enough so that it doesn't snap. To jump would be to forfeit your mission in dishonor. Is the burden of your task too great? Or will you find the strength to save your island from invaders?[otherwise]You return to the Plank. It whines again under your weight and you stare out at the endless sea. Although for some reason you feel called to jump, you remember the note in your pocket. You remember your orders. Your island is depending on you." Instead of jumping in the Plank: say "You take a deep breath and jump into the cold, dark sea below. Your body crashes against the water, and everything fades to black... You will never know it, but a week later, the pirate you failed to kill brings a raiding party to your island. Your family doesn't make it out alive."; end the game in death. Instead of going to the Plank when the player carries the Black Ball: say "You careless step onto the weak board while carrying the enormously heavy Black Ball. The wood snaps, sending you plummeting into the water and into your terrible demise. You will never know it, but a week later, the pirate you failed to kill brings a raiding party to your island. Your family doesn't make it out alive."; end the game in death. The Front Deck is a room. The Front Deck is north from the Pirate Ship. "An unloaded silver cannon waits along the side of the ship. You will need matches, a black ball, and a key." The Stern is a room. The Stern is east from the Pirate Ship. "The back of the ship is largely made up of barrels. Supplies for the pirate." The barrels is a thing. The barrels is in Stern. The barrels is scenery. The barrels can be lit or unlit. The description of the barrels is "These wooden, highly flammable barrels would be a tragedy for the pirate to find destroyed." [to Dr. Dunkelberg: Ignore that the code says the barrels can be lit, they're can't. I couldn't figure out why it didn't work no matter how hard I tried, but I thought I would keep it in to show my effort.] The Bow is a room. The Bow is west of the Pirate Ship. "You've made it to the front of the ship. You see nothing important." The Key is an object. The Key is in the Bow. The description of the Key is "A silver key for the silver cannon." The Key unlocks the Cannon. The Note is an object. The description of the Note is "Your orders are: Kill the pirate." The Note is carried. The Cannon is a locked container. The Cannon is in the Front Deck. A flammable thing is a kind of thing. A flammable thing can be lit or unlit. The Box of Matches is a flammable thing. The barrels is a flammable thing. Lighting is an action applying to one thing. Understand "light [the thing]" as lighting. Carry out lighting: now the noun is lit. Check lighting: if the thing is the Cannon and the Cannon is locked, say "You cannot light the locked cannon." instead; if the thing is the Cannon and the player does not carry the Box of Matches, say "You must be carrying the Box of Matches." instead; if the thing is the Cannon and the Black Ball is not inside the Cannon, say "The cannon must be loaded." instead. Check lighting: if the thing is the Barrels and the player does not carry the Box of Matches, say "You must be carrying the Box of Matches." instead. Report lighting the box of matches: say "You light [the noun]. It flickers to life and you feel its warmth dance around your fingers." Report lighting the Barrels: say "The flame starts slow, gradually creeping along the edges of the wooden barrels. Then, heavy wafts of fire begin to engulph the barrels, the heat sending hot, thick wind into your face. You should finish your business quickly." Report lighting the cannon: say "With the cannon unlocked, loaded tight, and your matches ready, you wait for the pirate to return to his ship. You glare out into the forest of your island. Nightfall has shrouded the empty beach, but the strong moonlight overhead glitters across the sand as if each granule was a tiny diamond. The beauty of it nearly distracts you when a few minutes later, the pirate emerges. Stomping over the pale, vibrant sand, the pirate heaves a mighty chest of 'treasure' between his arms. A nasty grin hangs across his face, gleeful and unknowing of his rapidly approaching death. You fire. Your cannon BOOMS, launching the Black Ball straight for the invader and colliding with the chest he cradled. The force of it topples the pirate into the sand, useless rocks bursting from the fake treasure he had stolen. You step away from the cannon, smiling. Once again, you have defended your home."; end the story. The Cannon can be lit or unlit.
