"Virtual Machine" by Nathan Popham Rule for printing the name of a room: do nothing. Rule for printing the name of a dark room: do nothing. Rule for printing the announcement of darkness: do nothing. The examine devices rule is not listed in the carry out examining rules. Knocking is an action applying to one thing. Understand "knock on [a door]" as knocking. Understand the command "flip" as switch. The time of day is 12:00 AM. When play begins: say " EXCELLENT[line break] SUBJECT IS READY[line break] BEGIN TEST There is a flash of pain and light as your mind is wiped clean, your thoughts and memories lost to the indifferent machine. As soon as the process completes, you slip into blackness.[line break][line break]" The Parlor is a room. "[if unvisited]You wake up on the floor of a small white room.[otherwise]The room is light-colored and spartan. A square light fixture fixed to the ceiling makes the room seem to glow. Some sort of dispenser is set inside a receptacle on the south wall, and the west shows the seams of a door." The white light fixture is a scenery object in the Parlor. The description is "It emits a bright white light." The dispenser is in the Parlor. It is scenery. "There is a bowl and a cup fixed to the bottom of the receptacle. Above each is a spout. It looks like a meal dispenser." The bowl is in the Parlor. The bowl is scenery. The cup is in the Parlor. The cup is scenery. Instead of taking bowl: say "The bowl is fixed in place. Seems like it isn't mealtime yet." Instead of taking cup: say "The cup is fixed in place. Seems like it isn't mealtime yet." The main door is a closed, unopenable door. It is scenery. It is west of the Parlor. The description is "Thin seams show the presence of a door, but there is no handle, button, or other distinguishing trait. Pushing on the door doesn't work--it must be openable only from the outside." Instead of opening main door: say "There is no visible way to open this door. You'll have to wait until it's opened from the outside." Instead of knocking main door: say "Your knocks seem to get swallowed by the door's material. There is no response." The Bedroom is north of the Parlor. "This room and everything in it is colored a deep blue. The ceiling light keeps the room comfortably lit, without the brightness of the white room. A bed stretches across one side of the room. On the opposite side of the room, a computer terminal is set into the wall, with a chair placed beside it." The blue light fixture is a scenery object in the Bedroom. The description is "It emits a comfortably dim light." There is a computer terminal in the Bedroom. It is scenery. "The terminal is off. You see no way of turning it on." There is a chair in the Bedroom. It is scenery. Instead of taking the chair: say "It is too heavy to carry." At 12:20 AM: now the large robot is in the Parlor; If the player is in the Parlor: say "The door on the west wall slides open with a faint whir of machinery. Behind it is a dimly-lit hallway, mostly obscured by a large robot coming through the door. As soon as it is inside, the door slides shut behind it."; If the player is not in the Parlor: say "You hear a faint whirring noise coming from the white room.". The large robot is a object. "There is a robot heading towards you." The description is "The robot is a wheeled monstrosity with many different appendages. It is currently coming straight towards you." Every turn: if the large robot is in the location of the player: say "Several of the robot's arms grab you with machine strength, then another presses against your head. You feel a shock flow through you, and struggle loses its importance...."; now the player is in the Exam Room. The Exam Room is a room. "[if unvisited]The next time you become conscious, you find yourself sitting in a formfitting chair in a dark room. There is a dim and seemingly sourceless light centered on you. The rest of the room is shrouded by shadows, but it feels vast. [otherwise] You are sitting in an examining chair in the center of a dim circle of light, surrounded on all sides by impenetrable darkness."
