When play begins: Say "You wake up on the cold grimy floor. Looking around you are dismayed to discover that you seem to be in an abandoned school. Specifically the HAUNTED school of A.Y. Jackson. Legends have told that one day, exactly 13 years ago a shock wave had rocked the school, leaving it barren and empty. Everybody had vanished without a trace. Some say they can still hear the screams of the students that terrorize the building.[line break] [line break]Your objective is to escape the school as quickly as possible. [line break] [line break] [bold type] Remember to keep calm and use all the clues you can find to escape. Time is running out. [line break] [line break]" [Foyer] The Foyer is a room. "You are currently in the foyer. It's dimly lit. You look around. To the east, you see a green door, and to the west, you see a black door. In the middle stands a spiral staircase." Every turn when the location is the Foyer: say "From far off you can hear [one of]deep growls reverberating through the air, sending chills down your spine.[or]a snarling sound, sending shivers down your spine.[or]animalistic noises, shaking the building.[at random]." [spiral staircase] A staircase is a kind of door. The spiral staircase is a staircase. "[If the staircase is locked]The staircase seems to be missing a couple steps.[end if][if the spiral staircase is unlocked]The newly fixed spiral staircase now contains steps made of planks of wood.[end if]" It is above the foyer and below the corridor. The spiral staircase is a closed locked door. The planks of wood unlocks the spiral staircase. Instead of examining the spiral staircase: say "There's a gaping hole where a couple steps must fallen. How will I ever get upstairs?" Understand "upstairs" and "up the stairs" and "staircase" as the spiral staircase. Instead of going through the locked spiral staircase: say "It's missing steps. I guess I would have to fix it to be able to climb up the stairs." Understand "Fix the spiral staircase with planks of wood" as a mistake ("Try UNLOCK the spiral staircase with planks of wood"). Understand "downstairs" and "down the stairs" as the spiral staircase. [Corridor] The Corridor is a room. "You now enter a corridor. To the west, you see a long hallway, with lockers lining the halls. To the east is a grey door with a sign above. It says that it leads to a darkroom. " [window] Understand "window" as grimy window. A grimy window is here. "At the end of the corridor you see a grimy window, like with everything else in the room seems to be coated in a layer of dirt. However, there are still weak rays of sunlight shining through." Instead of examining grimy window: say "While there seems to be cracks running through the surface of the glass, you are much too high up on the second floor to be able to escape through the window." [Tiles] Understand "Tiles" as broken tiles. Broken tiles are here. "Broken tiles litter the floor, caked in a layer of dirt after years of neglect." Instead of examining tiles: say "The tiles were once white, but after many years have a thick coating of dirt on it." [Posters] The posters are here. "There are many posters, hung haphazardly on the walls advertising various school events." Instead of examining the posters: say "The poster closest to you still retains some of the shine that speaks of previous lamination to it. In big, bold font, it screams,'Come to Prom for the time of your life. The ultimate high school experience to make lasting memories!'" The wooden door is a door. It is east of the corridor and west of the Darkroom. [Darkroom] Understand "Go to Darkroom" as a mistake ("Try go EAST"). The Darkroom is a room. "You enter the darkroom. A workshop meant to house aspiring photographers so they have a place to create prints of their photos. As the inks and various materials are light sensitive, the darkroom is often kept, as to it's namesake, dark. However, it should be safe for you to turn on the lights." [Light switch] The light switch is a device in the Darkroom. The description of the light switch is "A fairly normal flicked switch, there is a giant sticker beneath reminding you to 'turn off the lights to be ECO-FRIENDLY!'" The light switch is switched off. The light switch is fixed in place. "[if the light switch is switched off]The room is pitch black, with a sliver of light streaming through the open door. You think you see some objects in the room, but it's too dark to tell. There is a light switch on the wall near your shoulder." Instead of switching on light switch: say "The room is now flooded with light. You squint against the sudden glare and notice there are framed sayings on the wall. Haunting photographs of written messages in heavy, childlike font. You pick out various phrases such as,[line break][line break][Bold type]'YoU wILL NEver esCaPe!'[line break]'ThE monsTErS goNNA GeT yOU!'[line break]'GrEEN IS goOD, thE ANSweR IS ALwaYs GREen!'[line break]'RuN WHiLe yOu stIlL cAN!'[line break][line break][bold type]Author's Note: Remember, there may be importance to these messages later.[line break][line break][roman type] In the newly brightened darkroom, you can now see another room leading out to the east. It's probably where cleaning supplies for the darkroom are stored." [Janitor's closet] The Janitor's Closet is a room. It is east of the Darkroom. "The room only houses a few, measly cleaning supplies. While the janitor is nowhere to be found, you could probably still find something useful in the room." [table] The workbench is here. "There is a workbench at the back corner of the room." The table is fixed in place. The table is a supporter. [cloth] There is a dusty cloth. The dusty cloth is on the workbench. The description of the dusty cloth is "It seems to be a simple cloth that someone may use to wipe up a mess." Instead of taking the cloth: say "What could I possibly do with a dusty cloth?" [mop] The mop is here. "Along the right side of the room, you see a mop propped up against the wall." Instead of taking the mop: say "Unless there's a spill or puddle, I don't think I'll be needing a mop." [bucket] The bucket is here. "Beside the mop is an old rusty metal bucket, with a couple holes in it." Instead of taking the bucket: say "There is nothing useful about a broken bucket." [hook] The hook is here. "There is a hook screwed onto the wall to your left." The hook is a supporter. The hook is fixed in place. The description of the hook is "A regular hook used for hanging items." [steel key] The single steel key is on the hook. The description of the steel key is "Made of steel, the key seems to be in relatively good condition, unlike the metal bucket." The steel key unlocks the steel door. [Red door-exits game] The red door is a closed locked door. The red key unlocks red door. The red door is south of the foyer. "There is a red door is south of the foyer. It's painted a bloody red colour and boarded up, but you can still see sunlight streaming through." The description of the red door is "This is the only way out of the school, but it's locked...how are you going to get out?" [Library] The green door is an open door. The green door is east of the foyer. The green door is west of the library. The Library is a room. South of the library is the art room. "You have just entered the library. Normally filled to the brim with books, enamenating a calm feel, it instead feels desolate and lonely. To the south leads to an art room." [Book shelf] A bookshelf is here. The bookshelf is a supporter. The bookshelf is fixed in place. The description of the bookshelf is "The bookshelf seems unnaturally barren considering it's in a library." Understand "a book" and "the book" as a single book. Understand "shelf" as bookshelf There is a single book on the bookshelf. The book is a closed openable container. The description of the book is "It seems to be called 'the Mysteries, Miracles, and Tips to Unlocking the World'. Well, that seems kinda ironic, doesn't it? I wonder what it says inside?" Understand "piece of paper" and "letter" as slip of paper In the book is a slip of paper. The description of the slip of paper is "Upon further examination you realise the slip of paper is actually an old scrap of a letter, torn at the edges, stating, 'When exploring a place, and steps are missing, the key to unlock is planks of wooding...'" [Information desk] A information desk is here. an information desk is fixed in place. The information desk is a supporter The loose leaf pages are on the information desk. The description of the loose leaf pages is "The pages are strewn across the desk. Heavy nonsense scrawled across the paper. Almost like a child had drawn on top of them." Instead of taking the loose leaf pages: say "The pages have already been drawn on. They're not worth keeping." The paperback is on the information desk. Instead of examining the paperback: say "The book is worn down and soft, dog-eared at the corners. It is titled 'The Madness of it All', what could that possibly mean? Then when you open the paperback to read it, you notice that many of the pages are torn, out leaving jagged edges at the spine. The pages still left in the book are covered in heavy, nonsense scrawl." Instead of taking the paperback: say "What use does a damaged book have?" [Librarian] Librarian is a person. Librarian is in the Library. Every turn when the player can see the librarian: say "The librarian [one of]starts muttering under her breath[or]starts shaking, taking deep rasping breaths [or] paces nervously around [a random fixed in place thing which is in the location][or]paces anxiously around [a random fixed in place thing which is in the location].[at random]" The description of the librarian is "A frail, old woman with greying hair. Her glasses are crooked, perched at the top of her head and her clothes are rumpled. There is a nametag attached to her wrinkled light blue cardigan. It says Ms Holland.[line break][line break][bold type]Author's note: Wasn't the school supposed to be deserted? What might Ms Holland know about the School? Try ASKING her ABOUT 'the SCHOOL' 'the LIBRARY' or 'HOW TO 'ESCAPE'.[roman type]" Understand "Ms Holland" and "her" as Librarian Understand "Talk to [someone]" as a mistake ("Try, 'ASK (someone) ABOUT (something)'."). Instead of asking the librarian about "the school": say [page break][page break][italic type]"'The school... it's haunted...I hear noises in the night...'" Instead of asking the librarian about "the library": say [page break][page break][italic type]"'The books talk to me...They tell me all their stories...'" Instead of asking the librarian about "how to escape": say [page break][page break][italic type]"'You can't leave!.. The monster will catch you!.. The monster is always there!...'" Instead of asking the librarian about "the monster": say [page break][page break][italic type]"'The monster guards the chest...beware of the monster...'" [Art room] The Art Room is a room. The description of the Art Room is "The art room seems to have been abandoned for years. Posters on the walls are torn apart and there are shards of glass littering the floor. Remnants of a couple broken vases decorating the room." [planks of wood] planks of wood are here. The description of the planks of wood is "This seems like it might fit those broken stairs." [shards of glass] shards of glass are here. The description of the shards of glass is "Those look dangerous, best not to be carrying around broken glass." Instead of the player taking the shards of glass: say "That seems dangerous, I don't want to accidentally get cut." [broken mirror] A broken mirror is here. The description of the broken mirror is "The edges are jagged, distorting your reflection. Almost like a mirror in a funhouse." [Cafeteria] The black door is an open door. The black door is east of the Cafeteria. The black door is west of the foyer. The Cafeteria is a room. "You have entered the cafeteria, a place where people once used to sit, eat their lunch and hang out with friends, is now worn down and dark." [hammer] A hammer is here. Hammer is an object. Hammer unlocks locked locker. The description of hammer is "A very nice and HEAVY hammer, the tip which was once a shiny silver is now covered in grime. It's wood handle has an engraving, P.P. This could be helpful, or it could just be the initials of the construction worker who once worked here. Who knows?" [table] A table is here. "There is a table in the corner of the room." Instead of the player taking the table: say "Why would you want a table?" The description of the table is "Wow look a table, how special..." [cardboard box] There is a cardboard box in the cafeteria. The box is a closed openable container.The description of the box is "It's an old cardboard box, it looks like something is inside." Instead of the player taking the cardboard box: say "When you tried to pick up the box, it ripped, and is now useless." [letter] A scrap of a letter is inside the box. The description of the scrap of a letter is "It seems to be old and yellowing, ripped at the edges, however, you can still make out words stating, 'Break down those walls, and break down those doors, something heavy, is the answer you're looking for.'" Understand "slip of paper" and "scrap" and "scrap of paper" and "letter" as scrap of a letter [hallway] The hallway is a room. It is west of the corridor. It is east of the steel door. The description of the hallway is "Walls which once used to be filled with posters are now barren with paint peeling its way off. Papers are scattered all over the floor and lights flicker above. You hear the wind howl outside, but the windows are boarded up, unable for you to catch a glimpse of the world outside. Lockers line the sides of the hallway, some opened, some closed, and some with pictures of the students who once and maybe still roam the halls. [line break] You shudder as something brushes past your shoulder, you turn around only to find nothing there. Weird." [boarded up window] a boarded up window is here. boarded up window is an object. It is fixed in place. Description of boarded up window is "This looks like it was boarded up 13 years ago. I wonder what people were hiding from. The sunlight which shone through the other window is not present now. Either day has become night outside, or whoever sealed this window shut knew what they were doing." A grey locker is here. grey locker is a closed openable container. The description of grey locker is "The grey paint peels off the front of the locker, it looks normal, wait something is inside." Inside grey locker is note. A note is an object. The description of the note is "This note looks like it was just written with fresh ink. Is someone here? Who wrote this? It says 'When you reach the beast, be careful, be kind, you never know what type of danger you'll find.' What is that even supposed to mean?!" A blue locker is here. blue locker is a closed openable container. The description of blue locker is "An odor reeks from the direction of this locker. Ughh, what is that, a dead cat?" Inside blue locker is math textbook. Math textbook is an object. The description of math textbook is "Ew grade 12 calculus, you were never good at math and won't get any better now. This is useless." Inside blue locker is ziploc bag. ziploc bag is an object. The description of ziploc bag is "Eew, this is what has been carusing that horrid smell. You gag and through up a little in your mouth. What is that? Tuna sandwich? Roast beef? It might have been something edible if I was here 13 years ago." Ziploc bag is inedible. A a locked locker is here. a locked locker is a locked openable container. The description of a locked locker is "Ughh, you try and try, but you cannot get it open. maybe you can use something hard to break the locker." Inside a locked locker is a tennis ball. Tennis ball is an object. The description of Tennis ball is " The soft neon green exterior rubs aginst your palm as you pick it up. There are ridges in the ball which seem to belong to an animal...a tennis ball...who is the world hides a tennis ball? Why would anyone go through all that trouble to lock away a tennis ball. It must be important because someone didn't want anyone finding it." Understand "green fuzzy ball" and "ball" as tennis ball. "[If the locked locker is locked]The locker seems to be locked using a padlock the keyhole is rusted, so that won't do. Maybe you can break it open with something[end if][if the locked locker is unlocked]You did it! You opened the locker.[end if]" Understand "Break lock with hammer" as a mistake ("Try UNLOCK the locked locker with hammer"). Description of steel door is "This door is bolted shut. There is a slot for a key, but which one. Unlike the grime covering up the rest of the school, this door looks new. The shine in the steel reflects an image of you. Sweat rolls down your face as you figure out how to open this door." [The space in between] the space in between is a room. the space in between is west of the steel door and east of flights of stairs. The description of the space in between is "This just seems like the space between the steel door and the flights of stairs. You jump at the sight of a creepy painting. I want get out of here quick." [flights of stairs] flights of stairs is a staircase. The flights of stairs is west of the space in between. The flights of stairs is east of roof. The description of flights of stairs is "You cough as when you walk in as the dust in the air flies up your lungs. It takes a minute for you to adjust to the darkness. You feel for a lightswitch, but there is nothing of that sort. You can see a light at the top of the flights of stairs. Do you go up the flights of stairs? It's too late to turn back now." Understand "stairs" and "up" as flights of stairs. [Roof] Roof is a room. Roof is west of flights of stairs. The description of roof is "The cold air hits your face as you walk onto the roof. You take a deep breath of the fresh air and your lungs fill up as much as they can. The only light on the rooftop is the one provided by the full and moon and endless stars. If there wasn't a large creature lurking in the corner, it may actually be a beautiful place to star gaze. [Line break] [Line break]As you look around for an escape, you see it is too tall to jump down and there is no way to climb. There are toys scatter the ground as you walk towards the ledge. You see a pile of bones in the corner to your right, perhaps the people that tried to escape in the past, but failed and became the beast's meals." [Chest] Chest is a locked openable container. Chest is here. Description of chest is "This might be my escape out of this place. The untouched velvety red fabric, with a gold frame, glistens to the light of the moon. It looks impossible to get into except for three buttons, red, blue, and green. 'Choose one and live another day. Choose one of the others and die a slow and painful death, caused by yours truly. I wouldn't go near that if I was you.' You turn around and are faced by none other than the monster that guards the chest. You knew it couldn't be this easy, how could you be so stupid? Are you going to die?" [Red Key] Red key unlocks red door. Red key is inside chest. description of red key is "This is it? Travelling through the entire school, fixing stairs, getting through monsters, all for a stupid red key. What does this even do? How do I get out of here? Maybe this unlocks a door?" [Green Button] Green button is here. Green button unlocks chest. Green button is an object. [Red Button] Red button is an object. Red button is here. Instead of player taking red button: say "Kerosene is dropped on top of you. You turn to see what is happening and spot the monster. He says 'I told you to be careful, I told you that you only get one shot, no one ever listens to me.' You open your mouth to beg for forgiveness, but it is too late, your mouth is now filled with kerosene and you wince in pain. Your eyes sting shut, but only after you see the monster light a match. You feel the burn of the fire crawl up your legs, burn through your intestines and kill you inside out. As your soul leaves your body you think to yourself, Red, Fire, How could I be so stupid? YOU NEVER HIT THE RED BUTTON!"; end the game in death. [Blue Button] Blue button is an object. Blue button is here. Instead of player taking blue button: say "You are grabbed from behind. You attempt to struggle free but the grip of the monster is just too strong. You scream in pain as he squeezes you until you can barely make a sound. You are dumped into a large tank of water. The sky above you seals shut, as he puts on the lid. You pound on the glass, but there is no way to escape. Water keeps filling in, you have 3 more seconds of air left, 2, 1. Your memories flash before you as you take your final breath. The beast just stares at you and smiles. As your soul is taken from your body you think to yourself, Blue, Water, I should have known...Green Fuzzy Ball, Green Tennis Ball...too late now."; end the game in death. [monster ai] A person called Monster is here. The description of monster is "Many people have attempted to describe this beast, but everyone has died in doing so as staring at the beast for too long will kill you." Understand "talk to [someone]" as a mistake ("Starting a conversation with Monster may be difficult as a result of his aggressive nature. Try to ASK [the noun] ABOUT something or TELL [the noun] ABOUT something. He may provide you with hints or help to escape the school."). Asking someone about something is speech. Telling someone about something is speech. Answering someone that something is speech. Asking someone for something is speech. Instead of the player unlocking the chest with green button: if player is carrying Tennis Ball: continue the action; otherwise: say "GIVE ME MY FUZZY GREEN BALL FIRST". Instead of speech when the noun is Monster: repeat through Table of Monster's commentary: if the topic understood includes topic entry: say "[commentary entry][paragraph break]"; rule succeeds; say "' Monster Growls." Table of Monster's Commentary topic commentary "chest" "STOP! STOP! STOP! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? WALKING IN HERE, THINKING THAT I WILL ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS. I WANT MY FUZZY GREEN BALL." "hint" "'HINTS ARE FOR THE WEAK.'" "help" "'HELP IS AN ACT OF SUBMISSION AND DISHONOR.'" "key" "'KEY? THERE MAY BE A KEY IN THE CHEST, BUT WHY SHOULD I TELL YOU'" Instead of giving tennis ball to monster: say "WOW YOU ACTUALLY FOUND IT! NO HUMAN HAS DONE THIS BEFORE! THANK YOU! PRESS THE GREEN BUTTON, NO HARM WILL BE DONE! I WILL TELL YOU WHATEVER YOU WANT. Now to the chest, that old thing, when the darkness came 1300 years ago, 13 years for humans, my great, great, great, grandfather guarded this chest it was passed down generation after generation. We were sent here when the portal to the underworld was opened. The portal just so happened to open on the roof of this school. This chest was created by our master, to keep anyone who knows our secret inside, not allowing them to escape. Only the people I allow can open that chest.'" After unlocking red door with red key: say "The red door, creaks open. You stepout into the daylight and look around. You're free now! The door slams shit behind you, but you continue forward. You leave the school far behind. You actually made it out of there. Congrats!"; end the game in victory
