"Suicide Prevention" Use no scoring. The Start is north of Scenario 1. "John is a 25 year old man. Although he has a job and a circle of close friends, he feels alone. He started losing interest in his daily activities and he can’t seem to sleep at night. He would engage in reckless driving when he can’t sleep. John’s family confronted him and he responded aggressively. Additionally, John has started to think that his life is meaningless. He has thoughts about killing himself, but has not acted upon his thoughts yet. John is diagnosed with depression and suicidal tendencies. Putting yourself in the shoes of a counsellor, you are tasked to journey with John in this difficult time and help him overcome it. The choices you make in this story will determine John’s fate. To start, click on > and type in 's'." Scenario 1 is west of Scenario 2. Scenario 1 is east of Defeat 1. "You and John are beginning to talk about his suicidal thoughts. What should you do first? Option 1 (type 'e'): Remind John about his purpose in life Option 2 (type 'w'): Ask John to think about the implications his suicide would have on his family and friends" Defeat 1 is west of Scenario 1. "Unfortunately, John's depression worsened, threatening to consume him totally. Type 'e' to return." Scenario 2 is south of Defeat 2. Scenario 2 is north of Scenario 3. "You have reminded John about his purpose in life. However, he is still feeling troubled. What should you do? Option 1 (type 'n'): Ask John to engage in activities that make him feel better Option 2 (type 's'): Ask John to list out warning signs of his suicidal tendencies" Defeat 2 is north of Scenario 2. "Unfortunately, John felt reckless driving made him feel better. Causing him to fall further into the pit of depression. Type 's' to return." Scenario 3 is east of Scenario 4. Scenario 3 is west of Defeat 3. "John has listed out the warning signs. You decided that John needed to distract himself from his suicidal thoughts. What should you do? Option 1 (type 'e'): Encourage John to drink his problems away Option 2 (type 'w'): Ask John to engage in healthy activities" Defeat 3 is east of Scenario 3. "Unfortunately, alcohol is neither an effective antidepressant nor is it a good distraction. Causing John to be totally subsumed by his depression. Type 'w' to return." Scenario 4 is south of Scenario 5. Scenario 4 is north of Defeat 4. "John has attempted to engage in sports activities like badminton. He has also tried to socialise with his friends more. After three sessions, John told you that he lacks the motivation to continue both. His suicidal tendencies have not subsided. What would you recommend John to consider next? Option 1 (type 'n'): Ask John to confide in his family and/or friends about his suicidal tendencies Option 2 (type 's'): Ask John to continue socialising with people around him" Defeat 4 is south of Scenario 4. "Unfortunately, continuing something that doesn't work tends not to make it work. Dejected, John no longer seeks help from you. Type 'n' to continue." Scenario 5 is west of Scenario 6. Scenario 5 is east of Defeat 5. "John says that when communicating with his family and friends, he is easily irritated when they show their concern. What skills would you recommend John to adopt? Type 'e' to return." Scenario 6 is south of Victory!. Scenario 6 is north of Defeat 6. "There are times whereby you are unavailable and John feels overwhelmed by his suicidal thoughts. What should you do to prepare John for such instances? Option 1 (type 'n'): Come up with a list of emergency hotlines with John Option 2 (type 's'): Ask John to hold his thoughts and wait until you are available" Defeat 6 is south of Scenario 6. "Unfortunately, the delay was too much for John. Without immediate assistance, he lost his battle with depression. Type 'n' to return." Victory! is north of Scenario 6. "You have successfully assisted John in his difficult time! John has acknowledged his suicidal thoughts and what he can do to cope if his suicidal tendencies relapses. As a counselling student, it is important for you to recognise early signs and symptoms of suicide. By understanding different strategies to help someone cope with suicide, you can help reduce suicide rates in Singapore."
