"Tea Room" by Theo Michael The story headline is "Inaugural Weekly Coding Task: A Cup of Tea". The story description is "Thanks go to the members of the IF Forum, especially climbingstars, for all their help." Use the serial comma. The maximum score is 3. When play begins: say "You are beginning to get a headache. If you continue much longer you will lose control of your powers and your body servent can tell you how dangerous that is. Or he could have if he'd survived the lesson." Part 1 - Liquids Chapter 1 - Volumes and Fluid Containers A volume is a kind of value. 1 scoop (singular) specifies a volume. 2 scoops (plural) specifies a volume. A fluid container is a kind of container. A fluid container has a volume called a fluid capacity. A fluid container has a volume called current volume. The fluid capacity of a fluid container is usually 1 scoop. The current volume of a fluid container is usually 0 scoops. Liquid is a kind of value. The liquids are water, and tea. A fluid container has a liquid. After examining a fluid container: if the noun is empty, say "[The noun] is bone dry."; otherwise say "[The noun] contains [current volume of the noun] of [liquid of the noun]." Part 2 - Heat Heat is a kind of value. The heats are cold, cool, warm, hot, and boiling. Everything has a heat. The heat of a thing is usually cool. The heat of the brazier is hot. A liquid has a heat. Every turn when the turn count is odd: if the teapot is on the brazier: now the heat of the liquid of the teapot is the heat after the heat of the liquid of the teapot; if the heat of the teapot is not boiling, now the heat of the teapot is the heat after the heat of the teapot. The description of the pot is "pot.". The liquid of the pot is tea.] The house is north of the teahouse. The printed name of the house is "The House". Instead of listening when the player is in the garden, say "You hear the light trickle of water from the spring." Instead of smelling when the player is in the garden, say "You smell the soft scent of plum blossom undercut the smell of dark earth. There is just a hint of burning in the air." Instead of listening when the player is in the tearoom, say "You hear the sound of water from the garden." Instead of smelling when the player is in the tearoom ,say "The room smells of freshly laid tatami." The screen door is east of the tearoom and west of garden. The screen door is a door. The screen door is scenery. "A black lacquered frame backed by rice paper,lit golden by the sun outside." Understand "rice paper" as the screen door. Instead of going through the closed screen door: say "The paper screen is shut: you'd rip it." The printed name of the garden is "The Garden". The description of the garden is "Beautiful and well formed the path runs northwest, over the trickling creek. The source of the creek is a spring, from which the water wells slowly." Instead of going northwest when the location is the garden, say "It is not yet time for you to rejoin the world." Instead of going north when the location is the tearoom, say "To return to your work while so tightly wound would be an invitation to disaster." Instead of attacking the closed screen door, say "Good craftsmen are hard to find. Besides, it is much safer to keep outsiders from visiting the castle at this late stage." Understand "rip [something]" or "tear [something]" or "shred [something]" as attacking. Part 4 - Things Chapter 1 - Brazier In The tearoom is a lacquered table. The brazier is on the lacquered table. The description of the lacquered table is "A black lacquered table. Set into one end is a ring of white ceramic inside which sits the brazier." The description of the brazier is "A black iron ring filled with glowing coals." Understand "glowing" and "coals" and "stove" as brazier. The brazier is a supporter. Instead of pushing, pulling, turning, tasting, or touching brazier, say "You would burn yourself." Instead of pouring something into the brazier: now the current volume of the noun is 0 scoops; say "Steam rises, obscuring the brazier, but you can hear the clicking of the hot iron cooling quickly. When the steam clears you see that the brazier has warped."; end the story saying "Your tea remains unmade.". Instead of putting something on the brazier when the noun is not the teapot, say "There will be destruction, just not here. Not now. And you're hardly going to start with [the noun].". Check putting the teapot on the brazier: if the teapot is empty, say "There is no point putting an empty teapot on the stove." instead; if the heat of the liquid of the teapot is boiling, say "the water has already boiled." instead. Chapter 2 - Other Things Section 1 - The Teapot The teapot is on the lacquered table. The teapot is an open unopenable fluid container. The fluid capacity of the teapot is 4 scoops. The description of the teapot is "The weight and texture of cast iron but instead of black it is burnt orange. This is one of your more recent experiments in changing the nature of metals. When the steam clears you see that the brazier has warped."; end the story saying "Your tea remains unmade.". Section 3 - The Niche There is a niche in the tearoom. The description of the niche is "A rectangular niche in the wall paneled in pale wood." The niche is an open unopenable container. The niche is fixed in place. There is a vase in the niche. The description of the vase is "Unlike the rest of the room the vase is unrefined. You can see indentations underneath the glaze from a child's small hands." Understand "glaze" and "indentations" and "unrefined" and "hands" as the vase. The vase is a fluid container. Instead of taking the vase, say "It belongs in the niche, though it will look better once the flowers are arranged." Instead of examining, taking, or touching the child, say "There is no child here. Nor has there been for quite some time." The child is a thing. There is a scroll in the niche. The description of the scroll is "This is the scroll displayed during the spring. Section 5 - The Lacquered Box and Its Contents The green powder is in the blue lacquered box. The blue lacquered box is a closed openable container. The blue lacquered box is on the lacquered table. The description of the blue lacquered box is "Changing the colour of the lacquer was delicate work. You ruined many plates before perfecting the technique." The description of the green powder is "The tea is a finely ground powder the green of new growth." Understand "tea" or "powdered" as the green powder. Instead of eating the green powder: try tasting the green powder instead. Instead of smelling the green powder, say "The acrid tang makes your mouth water."
