When play begins: say "You are a wizard's young apprentice. He has just passed on, leaving you with his magical staff and a quest: 'Slay the dragon, for you are the chosen one.' he said. The dragon he referenced is a magical dragon that plagues the nearby village, scorching its crops and burning down homes. You have been tasked to stop it, so you must. Your magic staff has many secrets, but the wizard only taught you one - it can unlock certain doors with a simple touch. This will come in handy. Now let the adventure begin!" The player is carrying staff. The description of staff is "A slim stick of wood that contains magical power. It can unlock certain doors with a touch." The description of sword is "A gleaming, silver sword. Handy for battle." The front door is a closed, locked, openable door. The front door is east of the Main Hall and west of the Dirt Path. The staff unlocks the front door. After unlocking the front door with the staff: say "The door sprang open! Go east to pass through it." The Dirt Path is a room. "A long winding path heads east to the village. As you walk, you see a small coin on the ground." The coin is in the Dirt Path. The description of the coin is "A small, grimy silver coin. Someone must have dropped it." The Village is a region. The Village Square, Shop, Vault, and Crossroads are in the Village. The Village Square is east of the Dirt Path. The Village Square is a room. "[if the Village Square is unvisited]Finally, you've reached the village![end if]The village square is bustling with activity, though no one seems to want to talk. However, you see an old man sitting outside a pub nearby. He's not busy. Maybe you should ask him about the dragon. There is a shop to the east, and roads leading north and south." The old man is a person in the Village Square. The description of the old man is "An old man who looks like he's seen everything. I bet he's got stories to tell..." After asking the old man about "the dragon": say "The man sighs. 'Oh, that dragon ain't no good fer nothin! Lives up north in Mount Scorr. Burning our crops an homes an livelihoods, it's evil, it is! But the swords, they unlock four enchanted gates guardian the dragon's lair, and all of em together can kill the blasted beast. Now get off, I gots drink to drink.' Crime never pays."; end the game in death. The Shop is east of the Village Square. The Shop is a room. The printed name of the Shop is "Blacksmith's Shop" The description of the Shop is "The shop is a small, dimly lit room. [if unvisited]A man looks up from pounding his anvil. 'Hello. [otherwise]Smith greets you as you walk in.[end if]" Smith is a person in the Shop. He carries Armor Set. The Armor Set is wearable. The description of Smith is "A kindly blacksmith. His specialty is armor, but he's flexible." After giving the coin to Smith: say "Smith smiles. 'Ah, that's a beauty, that is. One set of armor, coming up!' He gives you a fine chain mail armor set. 'Now, this armor is enchanted,' he says. 'Got the spell from the wizard, I did. It'll protect you from the elements'"; now the Armor Set is carried by the player. After asking Smith about "the fifth sword": say "Smith's eyes widen. He leans in close to you, and whispers, 'You know about it? That I'm the guardian of the Ether? Well, just between us, I've been waiting for years for the chosen one to come along.' He points toward the south wall. 'There's a secret room behind the wall. I'll open it for you.' Smith smiles again. 'The sword's name is Aethor.' The wall swings inwards on hidden hinges, and you can enter the secret room! Go south to do so."; now the south wall is open. The south wall is a closed, locked door. The south wall is south of the Shop and north of the Ether Vault. The Ether Vault is a room. "[if unvisited]This small, stone-walled room is unimpressive at first, until you step inside. In the center of the room is the most beautiful sword you have ever seen. Its hilt is studded with clear, shining diamonds, and its blade seems to radiate immense power. A name is engraved on its pedestal: AETHOR, just as Smith said.[otherwise]Aethor's pedestal stands in this small room.[end if]" The Aethor is in the Ether Vault. After taking Aethor: say "You feel a rush of power surging through you. You now feel confident to take on the dragon." The Mountain Path is north of the Village Square. The Mountain Path is a room. "As you walk, the land becomes more gray, and desolate. Mount Scorr looms ahead as the path continues north. [if unvisited]Suddenly, you spy something glinting in the gravelly path. It appears to be a small red stone. You should examine it before you touch it.[end if]" The stone is in the Mountain Path. The description of stone is "A small red stone. It is partially clear, and glows with a warm light." The Crossroads is south of the Village Square. The Crossroads is a room. "You come to an aged wooden signpost. It points to four roads winding in different directions - East, West, Southeast, and Southwest. You should look at the signpost to see where they lead." The signpost is in the Crossroads. It is fixed in place. It is scenery. Instead of examining the signpost: say "The signpost says:[paragraph break] REALM OF FIRE: SW [paragraph break] REALM OF WATER: SE[paragraph break] REALM OF EARTH: E[paragraph break] REALM OF AIR: W" Section 3 - Fire The Cinder Road is southwest of the Crossroads. The Cinder Road is a room. "[if unvisited]You head southwest on a road paved with black, smooth stones. Ahead, you can see the road curving south. The Magma Fields is a room. "[if unvisited]The sudden, sweltering heat takes its toll on you, for you are exhausted. Ahead, to the south, you see something blurred by heat shimmers.[otherwise]The magma pools send heat shimmers high into the air, which is thick with smoke.[end if]" The Fire Forge is south of the Magma Fields. The Fire Forge is a room. "[if unvisited]You step through a door into a great hall, that reminds you of the wizard's palace. Dozens of small red creatures (called ash imps, you've read about them before) mill about, working at anvils and carting materials through a series of hallways. From what you've read, you know they are master weapon-makers. None of them have any time to talk with you. In the center of it all stands a golden throne, and sitting on it is the largest imp you've ever seen. He wears a golden crown inlaid with rubies, and stares at you with contempt. This must be none other than Flagrorum, king of all the ash imps. Flagrorum notices your staff. 'You carry the wizard's staff? Interesting... you must be his young apprentice. Seeing as I'm in a charitable mood, and you obviously have some magic skill, I won't incinerate you now. What is it you came for, coldflesh?' Perhaps you should ask him about the sword of fire, Inferni?[otherwise]The ash imps mill about, working as usual. Flagrorum lounges on his throne.[end if]" Flagrorum is a man in the Fire Forge. The description of Flagrorum is "The very large, rotund ash imp king. He obviously never has to do any work." After asking Flagrorum about "Inferni": say "Flagrorum emits a deep, throaty chuckle. 'Inferni? Of course I know about it, I made it! My swordmakers and I crafted the blades of all the legendary swords. But if you want it, there is one thing you must do first. Inferni has been hidden within the core of Mt. Ember, the volcano east of the Magma Fields, but the entrance is sealed, only openable with a magical Flare Stone. Once inside, you must face a worse challenge.' He guffaws. 'Good luck, wimp!' You must find this Flare Stone! Suddenly, the wizard's staff glows, and an idea pops into your head. The Flare Stone must be located north of a place you've visited before. You need to find it!" Mt Ember is east of the Magma Fields. Mt Ember is a room. "The jagged face of Mt. Ember, a volcano made of rock as black as coal, looms before you to the east. A large black door, carved from obsidian, is embedded in the rock, and it is closed. The Flare Stone must open the black door!" The black door is east of Mt Ember and west of Mt Ember Core. The black door is a closed, locked, openable door. The description of the black door is "A door carved out of obsidian that bars the way into Mt. Ember." The stone unlocks the black door. After unlocking the black door with the stone: say "As you hold up the Flare Stone to the door, the stone glows. An orange light flashes through the crack of the door, and slowly, the door swings inward. You can pass eastward into the volcano!" Mt Ember Core is a room. "The interior of Mt. Ember is blazing hot, and is illuminated by an enormous pool of lava in the center.[if unvisited] Suddenly, a rumble shakes the ground. The lava pool begins to churn and roil, as a giant figure emerges - a monster, made completely out of magma. It lets loose an earsplitting roar. You are certain that if you don't do something, you'll be burnt into oblivion. You see a glowing red orb inside the monster's chest. Could you throw something at it?[end if]" The orb is in Mt Ember Core. Instead of examining the orb: say "You're wasting time. The monster spits a fireball at you, burning you into ashes."; end the game in death. Instead of attacking the orb: say "You hurl your sword straight into the orb. The monster shrieks, and explodes into a thousand lava droplets, which fizzle into nothing. On the east side of the cavern, a red doorway appears out of the rock! You should go in."; now the Inferno Chamber is a room. "The walls of this small chamber are black, riddled with red, glowing cracks.[if unvisited]In the center of the room lies a red pedestal, and on it stands a magnificent broadsword. Nearly two feet long, its blade is as black as obsidian, and its hilt is studded with rubies. This can only be Inferni, the legendary sword of fire.[end if]" Inferni is in the Inferno Chamber. After taking Inferni: say "As you grip the hilt, you feel a radiant warmth surge up your arms and throughout your whole body, as well as a wave of courage. You stood up to the Magma monster, so why can't you defeat the dragon, too? Suddenly, there is a flash of sparks, and Flagrorum appears before you, standing this time. 'So, you have proven yourself worthy of Inferni, young one. It seems you may really have a chance of defeating the dragon. So, if it is your destiny, I will tell you what I know of the fifth sword, the one needed to truly slay the beast: to find it, you need only ask.' He smiles, a bit grudgingly. 'Let's get you moving on, yes?' Suddenly, you are engulfed in a bright light, and you find yourself back at the Crossroads."; now the player is in the Crossroads. Straight east, the path leads toward a large, nondescript hill." Section 6 - Air The Cliff Path is west of the Crossroads. The Cliff Path is a room. "You travel a winding path that seems to be paved in silver dust. [if unvisited]The path leads up, up, up a hill, until you reach the top. You look over the edge of a sheer cliff. But at the edge is a large chain, stretching high up into the sky. You can climb up it.[else]You see the chain stretching high into the sky.[end if]"
