"The Red English Binder" by Grade 5 Use no scoring. When play begins: say "[italic type]Oh, no! You've lost your red English binder. But here comes your principal. Perhaps he's seen it. 'Maybe', he says. 'I just picked a binder and locked it somewhere, but I don't remember exactly where' 'Check in Room A-221. See if it's there.' You find your way to A-221 to begin the search...[italic type]" A-221 is a room. "A-221 is a fairly drab classroom, with twenty-four student desks and a like number of computers. It sports at least ten teacher-made signs about grammar and literature and one long, commercial poster. You search and search and can't seem to find your binder anywhere. The hallway is to the east of room A-221, something makes you want to walk in that direction" The Hallway is a room. It is east of A-221. "This is an ordinary school hallway. The principal's office is to the south. You can't think of any reason you would want to go in any other direction right now." The Principal's office is a room. It is south of the hallway. "The principals office is a room you had been familiar with at some of your previous schools. But for this school, it is your first time. The room is not very big, but not that small either. Two shelves line a couple of the walls. There is a closet, a desk and a pretty comfortable chair there. As you get in you can see someone hiding under the desk. It seems to be Jeff, the school's bully who stole your snaks last week" The closet is scenery in Principal's office. It is a closed openable container. It is locked and lockable. "The closet is designed to store and organize all sorts of papers, but it could hold lots of other things, too." The desk is here. The desk is scenery. The description of the desk is "An old wooden victorian desk. There is a key on top of it" Jeff is a man in the Principal's office. The description of Jeff is "A sixth grader, wearing a baseball shirt. [if the key is carried by Jeff] He is carrying a key." [end if] Instead of attacking Jeff: say "You have been suspended from school for violent behavior."; end the story saying "And you have failed to recover your binder." The key is here. The key unlocks the closet. The description of the key is "An ordinary brass key." A mushroom is here. It is edible. "A polka-dotted mushroom pokes out of a flower pot. It is extremely appetizing." The description is "[if we have not examined the mushroom]Upon further examination, you decide that, while possibly scrumptious, it is also possibly a toadstool. You might want to keep examining it[otherwise]Now that you look at it again, you can see clearly that it is a toadstool; a nasty looking one, at that[end if]." After taking the mushroom: say "You deftly snap the mushroom's stalk, and pluck the hapless fungus from its natural habitat." After dropping the mushroom: say "You discard the abused mushroom to the ground like a used facial tissue." After eating the mushroom: say "You pop the scrumptulescent mushroom treat into your mouth. It tastes like fungal-flavored candy. The gastronomical delight turns out to be a toadstool, and you succumb to its choking, asphyxiating aftertaste."; end the story saying "You have died". Unlocking is an action applying to one thing. Understand "unlock [something]" as unlocking. After unlocking the closet: say "What appeared to be a functional simple closet, it turns to be a secret passage. A set of steep stairs goes straight down into darkness." The Secret room is a room. It is down of the principal's office. "This passage is dark and cramped. This is obviously the original entrance to the underground chambers. A dim shaft of light comes from the exit to the hallway above. There is an old chest here." The chest is here. It is a scenery. It is a closed openable container. The description is "An old chest covered in dust. You might want to try to open it." The binder is in the chest. The description is "The red English binder that you lost recently. You've been looking for it everywhere." Understand "notebook" as the binder. After taking the binder: say "As you take the binder, you find that, under it, is a homework pass, made out to you.";end the story saying "You have won".
