The office is a room. "This is my first experiment with interactive fiction. Be sure to examine the furniture and objects before you take anything. You are in a large, untidy office with walls painted warm gold."
The desk is in the office. it is fixed in place. The description of the desk is "An old oak library table."
The papers are on the desk. The description of papers is "These are mostly uninteresting: bills, receipts and grocery lists. However there is also a woven object or sampler." Understand "oddments" as papers.
The sampler is on the desk. The description of sampler is "Someone has made a woven sampler out of brightly coloured yarn. It seems to be an experiment using different kinds of patterns. Perhaps someone was planning to weave a scarf. The object has no obvious function but you are tempted to feel the texture." Understand "woven object" as sampler.
Instead of taking the sampler, say "The yarn of the sampler comes apart and drops from your grasp. The pieces crawl away like worms and disappear from view."
The bookshelf is in the office. It is fixed in place. The bookshelf is an open container. The description of the bookshelf is "Various books line the shelves. Many of them are field guides or books about gardening and natural history. One with a gold-lettered spine draws your attention."
The book is in the bookshelf. The book is an openable, closed container. The description of the book is "The cover of the book is dark red with a strange pattern of gold lines. The title on the spine says, Mfleebwigz barbituran togal."
The leaf is in the book. The description of the leaf is "A gold-dipped oak leaf has been used as a bookmark on a page that seems to give the instructions for some kind of enchantment. The words are in English but their meaning is unintelligible. Fascinating for a rainy day when you have nothing else to read. Still the gold leaf might come in handy."
Instead of taking the leaf, say "The gold leaf crumbles to dust and the magic spell vanishes from the page. It was the key to eternal life, too bad you couldn't read it."
Some scattered documents on the floor are in the office. The description of documents is "Nothing immediately catches your eye, but looking more closely you find a strange drawing. It depicts a man stripped to the waist stuggling with a huge snake. Repulsive! Still, you feel drawn to pick up the documents."
Instead of taking the documents, say "The documents erupt into flames and vaporize. Fortunately this causes no harm except some temporary hair loss. You see a snake crawling through a doorway to the west."
West of the office is the hallway. The description of the hallway is "The snake has disappeared." 
In the hallway is a cabinet. the cabinet is a closed, openable container.
The crystal is in the cabinet. The description of the crystal is "A clear, colourless, multi-faceted crystal." After taking crystal: say "The crystal explodes in your hand, blowing you into another place and time."; 
end the game in victory.
