"Sunrise" by Jesse Cataldo Your Bedroom is a room. "[if visited] Your room looks the same as you left it. There are no elves that will clean it for you.[otherwise]Your alarm is blaring. You hit it and realize, with a rush of adrenaline, that you accidently switched it off instead of to snooze. That kicks you awake. You stand and switch on the light. you squint as your eyes adjust to the light. Your bed is messy as usual. Your clothes are strewn about the room, hanging off the various surfaces and light fixtures. You should probably clean it. But not right now! You decided to wake yourself up at 4 in the morning to watch the sunrise, and by golly, that's what you're going to do! Oh no! Where are your keys!? And a blanket! How can you sit in the meadow comfortably without driving there and some sort of barrier between the dew and your one clean pair of pants!? The Kitchen is East.[end if]" the player is carrying a Compass. A Blanket is in your bedroom. The Kitchen is east of Your Bedroom. "[if visited]No time for breakfast, you need to move![otherwise]You stare dismally at the mountain of dishes in the sink. You have a dishwasher. However that has turned into your clean dishes drawer. Only able to be refilled once fully depleted. Forget about it right now! It's four in the morning, the earth is turning on it's axis! The sunrise is hurtling at you at 900 miles per hour! Your car is out the door to the North. You usually wouldn't pay attention to the cardinal directions but since a huge ball of flaming gas is going to appear in the sky to the East. You thought you might as well carry a compass on you.[end if]" Your Keys are in the kitchen. [object descriptions] The description of the Compass is "The compass points North. How helpful."; The description of your keys is "Metallic instruments that allow the user to lock or unlock locks. These just start your car." The description of blanket is "A comfortable woolen blanket." The Meadow is north of the kitchen. South of the meadow is nowhere. The description of the meadow is "You drive about an hour South to the spot you picked out a week ago. Today was the first day that your alarm woke you up and not the sun. You pull onto the lonely gravel road just in time. The sky is looking dangerously close to beautiful. Without a second to lose, you kill the engine, grab your blanket and vault out of the driver's seat. You sprint two paces and dive to the ground, spreading the blanket under you in midair. The blanket is thin, the ground is hard and knocks the wind out of you. You can't be bothered. You roll onto your back, glance at your compass and face east. " before taking blanket: if in bedroom: say "You pick the blanket up off the floor."; if in kitchen: say "You pick the blanket up off the floor and brush off the dirt."; before taking keys: If in bedroom: say "You frantically search for five minutes or so. Finally, you are able to distinguish their shape by feel in a pile of your underwear. I suggest you be a bit more careful with them."; If in kitchen: say "You grab your keys from the counter. They jangle loudly before being consumed by your pocket."; instead of waiting: if player is not in meadow: say "You can't wait around! The sun is going to rise soon!"; stop the action; If in meadow: end the story finally saying "The sun first fills the sky with light. Then after a few more minutes a blinding splotch of sun clears the horizon. You sit there squinting as the entire sun forms into a disk in the sky. It warms you as it climbs higher into the sky. You feel quite inspired but also quite tired. After about 6:30 the sun floats high enough to where it's boring to watch. You drive home, inspired. Well done."; Instead of going north in the Kitchen: if the player does not carry the keys: say "[if player does not carry a blanket]You are completely unprepared! How do you expect to inspire yourself to be a new person if you see the same sunrise that you see every time you stay up too late playing video games? You need to drive to the meadow, sit in the wet grass and watch the sunrise.[otherwise]This isn't Grand Theft Auto, You need keys to start your car.[end if]"; stop the action; if the player does not carry the blanket: say "I don't expect you'll quite enjoy the beauty of the sunrise if you're bottom is soaked in freezing dew. Why don't you grab something comfortable to sit on."; stop the action; continue the action. Instead of dropping compass: say "You look down to your belt where your compass is attached by a key ring. You'd love to spend an hour messing with these items until they were all broken but you're on quite a time constraint."; stop the action; Instead of going north in meadow: say "You're here. Now all you have to do is wait."; Instead of going south in meadow: say "You're here. Now all you have to do is wait."; Instead of going east in meadow: say "You're here. Now all you have to do is wait."; Instead of going west in meadow: say "You're here. Now all you have to do is wait.";
