"Tea Strained" by Joey Jones The story headline is "A ridiculously fiddly bare-bones tea drinking implementation". Use no scoring. The Kitchen is a room. "It's seven in the morning, and you've just pulled an all nighter. You need a caffeine push to keep you awake for the next hour. It's time to [bold type]knock back a nice hot brew[roman type] before the shoddy implementation of your surroundings starts to have a permanent effect." Chapter the Stuff [Nothing here has descriptions. This is BAD practice, but because this isn't a proper game, I don't feel too bad about it.] The sink is in the kitchen. The sink is a container. The tap is a part of the sink. The tap is a device. The fridge is a closed, openable container in the kitchen. The bottle is in the fridge. Some milk is in the bottle. The bottle is a closed, openable container. The bottle is transparent. water is a thing. The bin is a closed, openable container in the kitchen. The cupboard is in the kitchen. The cupboard is a closed, openable container. The kettle is a container. The mug is an open unopenable container. The counter is in the kitchen. The kettle is on the counter. The tea-box is on the counter. Understand "box" and "tea box" as the tea-box. The mug is in the cupboard. The tea-box is a closed, openable container. The tea bag is in the tea-box. The sugar-pot is a closed, openable container on the counter. Understand "sugar pot" and "pot" as the sugar-pot. The sugar is in the sugar-pot. The hot-tea is a thing. Instead of taking the hot-tea, try drinking the hot-tea. The printed name of the hot-tea is "hot tea". Understand "hot tea" and "tea" as the hot-tea. Instead of drinking the milk, say "Nah, the milk is for strictly tea-related purposes only.". Check drinking the hot-tea: try quaffing instead. The spoon is in the drawer. The spoon is portable. The drawer is a closed openable container in the kitchen. The printed name of the sugar-pot is "sugar pot". The printed name of the tea-box is "tea box". The water is either hot or cold. The water is cold. The button is part of the kettle. The button is a device. Does the player mean drinking the hot-tea: it is very likely. Chapter the Drinking Quaffing is an action applying to nothing. Understand "knock back a nice hot brew" as quaffing. Check quaffing: if the tea bag is not in the bin: say "(first making a cup of tea)"; silently try making tea; if the tea bag is in the mug: say "(first putting the tea bag in the bin)"; silently try inserting the tea bag into the bin; if the spoon is held: say "(first putting down the spoon)"; silently try putting the spoon on the counter; if the mug is not held: say "(first taking the mug)"; silently try taking the mug. Report quaffing: say "You take a deep gulp of fresh tea. Ah! That'll do it. For now."; end the story. Report drinking: say "No way, now way, mananamana! Um. Do the kids still say that?" The block drinking rule is not listed in the check drinking rulebook. Chapter the Making Making tea is an action applying to nothing. Understand "make tea", "make cup of tea", "make some tea" and "make a cup of tea" as making tea. Report making tea: say "The tea is made!" Check making tea: if the hot-tea is not in the mug: say "(first stirring the tea)"; silently try stirring; if the spoon is in the mug: say "(first removing the spoon from the mug)"; silently try taking the spoon. Chapter the Sink Check switching on the tap: if the water is not off-stage: say "You've already poured out some water. Waste not want not and all that." instead; if water is off-stage: if the kettle is not in the sink: say "You switch on the tap but the water just goes down the sink, so you switch it back off again." instead. Carry out switching on the tap: now the water is in the kettle; now the tap is switched off. Report switching on the tap: say "You turn on the tap and water fills into the kettle." Chapter the kettle Check switching on the button: if the water is not in the kettle: say "(first filling the kettle)"; silently try inserting the kettle into the sink; silently try switching on the tap; if the kettle is not on the counter: say "(first putting the kettle back on the counter)"; silently try putting the kettle on the counter. Carry out switching on the button: now the water is hot; now the button is switched off. Report switching on the button: say "You put the kettle on and after a few moments the water comes to the boil.". Chapter the altered regular actions Before inserting something into something: if the second noun is closed: say "(first opening [the second noun])"; silently try opening the second noun. Check inserting the mug into the sink: say "You don't drink tap water, and you never wash up." instead. Before taking: if the noun is in a closed container (called the box): say "(first opening [the box])"; now the box is open. Instead of drinking the mug: try tea drinking instead. Before taking the tea bag: if the tea bag is in the mug and the water is in the mug: say "(using the spoon)"; if the spoon is not held: say "(first taking the spoon)"; silently try taking the spoon. This is the opening-stuff rule: if the action requires a touchable noun: if the noun is not in a closed container: make no decision; if the noun is in a closed container (called the enclosure): say "(first opening [the enclosure])"; silently try opening the enclosure; if the action requires a touchable second noun: if the second noun is not in a closed container: make no decision; if the second noun is in a closed container (called the enclosure): say "(first opening [the enclosure])"; silently try opening the enclosure; The opening-stuff rule is listed first in the action-processing rules. Instead of taking the water, say "It's too slippery!". Before inserting something into the mug: if the noun is not the tea bag and the noun is not the spoon: say "And risk ruining your perfect cuppa? Not likely!" instead; if the noun is the tea bag: if the mug is not carried and the mug is not on the counter: say "(first taking the mug)"; silently try taking the mug. Chapter the Sugaring Sugaring is an action applying to one thing. Understand "sugar [something]" as sugaring. The spoon is a supporter. Check sugaring: if the spoon is not held: say "(first taking the spoon)"; silently try taking the spoon; if the sugar is not on the spoon: say "(first putting the sugar on the spoon)"; silently try putting sugar on the spoon. Carry out sugaring: now the sugar is in the mug. The can't put onto something being carried rule is not listed in any rulebook. Report sugaring the tea: say "You sprinkle some sugar into the tea.". Carry out stirring: now the water is off-stage; now the hot-tea is in the mug; now the sugar is in the sugar-pot.[magical, I know!] Report stirring: say "You stir the tea, making the water the requisite shade of old-ladies tights." Chapter the pouring Pouring is an action applying to one thing. Understand "pour [something]" as pouring. Check pouring: if the noun is not the kettle and the noun is not the bottle, say "That would only make a mess." instead; if the noun is not held: say "(first taking [the noun])"; silently try taking the noun; if the noun is the kettle: if the water is cold: say "(first boiling the kettle)"; silently try switching on the button; if the noun is the bottle: if the bottle is closed: say "(first opening the milk bottle)"; silently try opening the bottle; if the mug is not on the counter: say "(first putting the mug on the counter)"; silently try putting the mug on the counter. Instead of pouring the milk, try pouring the bottle. Carry out pouring: if the noun is the bottle, now the milk is in the mug; if the noun is the kettle, now the water is in the mug. Report pouring: if the noun is the bottle, say "You pour the milk into the mug."; if the noun is the kettle, say "You pour the hot water into the mug!" Test me with "knock back a nice hot brew". [obviously doesn't work in the published version]
