"Environmental Stewardship" The maximum score is 200. The Interior Plains of Canada is a room. "You are currently at the beginning of a journey around Canada that will see you having to make tough choices that will have an impact on the natural environment. The goal is to make the environment better. You begin your journey in a field located in the Interior Plains of Ontario. The field shines in gold as the sun sets to the west. Travel east, towards the Canadian shield, to find forests scattered around. Type 'go east' to continu." The Canadian Shield is east of the Interior Plains of Canada. "Your journey first takes you to a lovely forest. The forests are bursting with life, there are many healthy trees and animals. You are standing in the forest and notice people cutting down the trees to make a shopping center. Your first thought is that you would love to have a new shopping center close to home but then you wonder what will happen to the natural habitat in the forest. Do you help cut down the trees or leave it alone? To cut the trees type 'push tree'. To save the forest type 'push deer'." The tree is in the Canadian Shield. The tree can be pushed. After pushing the tree: say "Lots of trees that make up these forests are cut down every day for people to make things or clear land. While this can bring in a lot of money for the economy, there can be really bad consequences for the natural habitat such as the loss of animals habitat and greater climate change. It is very possible that by doing this, the people lose more resources than they gain. You did not help the environment and therefore you have lost 50 points. Type 'go south' to continue."; award -50 points The deer is in the Canadian Shield. The deer can be pushed. After pushing the deer: say "Congratulations, you have earned 50 points. You have chosen to save the forest which will have a positive impact on the environment and prevent the deer and other animals from losing their habitat. Type 'go south' to continue."; award 50 points The Grocery Store is south of the Canadian Shield. "You next stop is a grocery store to buy some food. You would like to buy some strawberries, some lettuce and some carrots. You notice that you can get all three items for $8.99 by choosing the items that have been imported from far away. If you choose to buy the local food items, the cost is $11.99. You only have $20.00 to spend on your journey and you know that you need to get other items as well but you know that every decision has an effect on the environment. Type 'take local' to buy the local food items or 'take imported' to buy the imported food items'. " Local is in the Grocery Store. Local can be taken. After taking Local: say "Congratulations eco warrior. By buying local, you have helped support the local farmers in your community and reduced the amount of carbon emissions and nonrenewable resources that have to be used in order to get your food to the store. This will help reduce climate change. Type 'go west' to continue."; award 50 points Imported is in the Grocery Store. Imported can be taken. After taking Imported: say "Although the price is cheaper, the cost to the environment is great. By buying imported food, the local farmers are not being supported and the carbon emissions produced by the vehicles needed to transport the food contributes to climate change. You have lost 50 points. Type 'go west' to continue."; award -50 points The House is west of the Grocery Store. "Your final stop is back home to think about how you can have a positive impact on the environment from your very own home. You have several ideas in mind but you only have the time to implement one. You are thinking that you can start your own recycling program at school, turn off lights/electrical devices when you are not using them or give your grass extra water during a town issued water alert to ensure that your grass is the best in the neighbourhood. Enter ‘take recycling' to start the recycling program, 'take lights’ to turn off lights when they are not in use and 'take sprinkler’ to run your sprinkler during the water advisory.†Recycling is in the House. Recycling can be taken. After taking Recycling: say “By starting a recycling program in your school, you are extending your environmental stewardship efforts beyond your own actions. While actively recycling will play a positive role in the environment by reducing waste and reusing items and materials, starting a recycling program will encourage others to take action. The result will have a much greater positive impact on the environment by growing the cause and encouraging others to participate. You earn 100 points. Type 'go north' to continue.â€; award 100 points Lights is in the House. Lights can be taken. After taking Lights: say “By turning off the lights and other electrical devices that are not being used, you are being conscious of resources and power plant emissions by saving energy. Think about how you can encourage others to join you and practice environmental stewardship. You earn 50 points. Type 'go north' to continue.â€; award 50 points Sprinkler is in the House. Sprinkler can be taken. After taking Sprinkler: say “Water should be treated as a precious resource with a limited supply. The town has requested that their residents reduce their usage for a reason, because there is a shortage. Running your sprinkler is not a necessity, it is a desire or a human want that does not justify the usage request. You lose 50 points. Type 'go north' to continueâ€; award -50 points House 2 is north of House. Every turn when in the House 2 : if score is 200 begin; say "Congratulations on the wise choices you have made. You have made the environment a better place."; end the game in victory; end if. Every turn when in the House 2: if score is 150 begin; say "Congratulations on the wise choices you have made.
