Bridge Underside is a room. A pay phone is in Bridge Underside. "A pay phone stands here, crying out for a quarter." The description of the pay phone is "It's just begging for a quarter." The player carries a quarter. The description of the quarter is "This quarter remains eerily shiny and new, even after all it's been through." Wallace is a man in Bridge Underside. "Wallace stands here expectantly." The player carries a Macguffin. The description of the Macguffin is "This looks very significant." Paying is an action applying to one thing. Understand "pay [pay phone]" as paying. Check paying the pay phone when the player does not carry the quarter: say "You don't have a quarter to pay the phone with." instead. Carry out paying the pay phone: try inserting the quarter into the pay phone. Instead of inserting the quarter into the pay phone: say "You insert the quarter into the phone and learn something valuable. Then you get the quarter back." Instead of giving the Macguffin to Wallace: say "Wallace accepts the Macguffin and slopes off."; now Wallace holds the Macguffin; remove Wallace from play. [this is an old-school formulation; in 6M62 you say "now Wallace is nowhere."]
