"Warrant" by J Madden When play begins: say "You're standing outside of a brick-faced, two-level home, typical of Boston's South End. It's just after one AM, and you've been called here, along with five of your fellow officers, to investigate the body laying a few yards before you. Or, more precisely, why it fell from the second floor onto the building's front stairs." A light source is a kind of device. Carry out switching on a light source: now the noun is lit. Carry out switching off a light source: now the noun is unlit. A flashlight is a light source. Understand "light" as flashlight. A journal is a kind of thing. A journal can be read or unread. A journal is usually unread. Understand "book" as journal. The player carries a flashlight. The description of the flashlight is "It's a black, metal flashlight, approximately ten inches long." The player carries a semi-automatic pistol. The description of the semi-automatic pistol is "Your standard-issue pistol. It holds 12 rounds." Outside the House is a room. The description of Outside the House is "There's no moon out tonight, but the flashing lights of the three squad cars called to the scene cast an eerie blue light, illuminating the sidewalk and house in front of you. Behind your back, you can hear the muffled voices of the other officers. The front door is at the top of the twelve stairs standing before you. About halfway up the stairs is the body, now covered with a white sheet. " The body is scenery in Outside the House. The description of the body is "Though it's been covered with a sheet, it's still a rather uncomfortable sight." your fellow officers is a thing. It is in Outside the House. The description of your fellow officers is "You look back at the other officers dispatched to the house, and wonder why you were chosen to search the interior of the home. With a sigh, you prepare yourself to climb the stairs." The Front Door is a room. It is up of Outside the House. The description of The Front Door is "Before you, to the north, the entryway to the two-level home stands slightly ajar. You are standing on a small, rectangular door mat. The flashing blue light crashes against the wooden door, but the interior of the house quickly recedes into blackness." The mat is scenery in The Front Door. The description of the mat is "A rather dirty and ragged looking mat. It cheerily proclaims: WELCOME!". The entrance is north of The Front Door and south of Foyer. It is an open door and scenery. Understand "door" as entrance. The description of The Foyer is "The foyer is dimly lit by the flashing light outside. There's a bare coat rack here, and not much else. An unlit hallway extends north into the gloom, and a flight of stairs go up to the second floor." Hallway is a dark room. It is north of Foyer. "The slender beam given off by your flashlight adds to the already cramped feeling of the narrow passageway. Framed photographs hang over the peeling wallpaper on the east wall. Between two of the paintings is an opening to what looks like a living room. To the west is a small door. Further down the hall, there are rooms to the north and northwest." Pictures is scenery in Hallway. Understand "photos" as pictures. Understand "photographs" as pictures. The description of pictures is "Each picture frame contains an old, black and white photograph. The various subjects of the photos all wear the same dull expression, and their eyes have a disconcerting, lifeless quality." The small door is east of Closet and west of Hallway. It is a door and scenery. Closet is a dark room. "The tiny closet under the stairs is cluttered with cleaning supplies. A few old cardboard boxes lay on the floor." Kitchen is a dark room. It is northwest of Hallway. "The dingy old kitchen looks as if it hasn't seen use in quite some time. A wooden knife-block sits on top of the dusty counter that runs along the west wall. There is just enough room to squeeze between the counter and a rickety collapsible table against the opposite wall. At the table sits a lonely chair. You can hear a faint buzzing from the direction of the refridgerator against the back wall. Next to the refridgerator is a small, rectangular window." a knife-block is a thing in Kitchen. Understand "knives" or "knife" or "block" as Knife-Block. The description of Knife-Block is "The knife-block holds knives of various length and serration. One knife, however, is noticably missing." Instead of taking knife-block, say "You see no reason to encumber yourself with that. Besides, you've already got your pistol." rickety table is scenery in Kitchen. The description of rickety table is "The old table looks like it's been through a lot. Its surface has been cut and stained and countless places, and its leg is propped up by a small book." lonely chair is scenery in Kitchen. The description of lonely chair is "The lonely chair gives you a feeling of sudden isolation. You then realize, quite to the contrary, that you've had a feeling of being watched ever since you entered the front door. " the small book is scenery in Kitchen. "It's a paperback novel, but the cover has been torn off and you can't determine the title or author." the refridgerator is a closed container. It is in Kitchen. Understand "fridge" as refridgerator. The description of the refridgerator is "The battered old refridgerator doesn't look like it gets much use." a small brass key is a thing. The description of small brass key is "A small brass key." kitchen window is scenery in Kitchen. The description of kitchen window is "Looking through the dirty glass, you can see that behind the house there is a garbage-choked alleyway." Instead of opening the window, say "Despite your best efforts, the window doesn't budge." Instead of examining lonely chair for the first time: say "The lonely chair gives you a feeling of sudden isolation. You then realize, quite to the contrary, that you've had a feeling of being watched ever since you entered the front door. [line break][line break] You hear a slight thump overhead, followed by a creaking of floorboards on the second floor." Instead of examining the small book for the first time: say "It's a paperback novel, but the cover has been torn off and you can't determine the title or author. [line break] [line break]While bending down to inspect the novel, you notice a small key taped to the underside of the table."; now the key is in Kitchen. Instead of opening the refridgerator for the first time: say "As soon as the refridgerator door peels open, you are assaulted by a horrendous, rotten stench. The fridge holds a few long-spoiled food items, providing a feast to a crowd of flies. Stomach turning, you quickly slam the door shut." Instead of opening the refridgerator: say "You can't imagine why you'd want to repeat that experience." north door is north of Hallway and south of Bathroom. It is a door and scenery. Bathroom is a dark room. "The same air of neglect that pervades the rest of the house fills the tiny bathroom. The round, once-white sink directly in front of you is missing a knob, and the mirror above it is cloudy and grime-covered. The dirty, lidless toilet seems to have been dry for a long time." grimy mirror is scenery in Bathroom. The description of grimy mirror is "It's so covered in filth that you can't see a thing." dingy toilet is scenery in Bathroom. The description of dingy toilet is "The toilet bowl is caked in a vile-looking sludge." bathroom sink is scenery in Bathroom. The description of bathroom sink is "You try the remaining knob, but unsurprisingly, nothing comes out." Living Room is a room. It is east of Hallway. "You're standing in what must have once been a very cozy living room. Now, however, the carpet is caked with dirt and dust, and the bookshelf along the north wall is empty. The fireplace set into the east wall, once a source of warmth and comfort, now resembles an inky-black maw, which seems even to swallow the tenuous illumination from your flashlight. Before the fireplace, there is a moldy old couch and chair. To the south is a large bay window." the metal box is a locked openable container. small brass key unlocks the box. "A small, rectangular safe deposit box." a moldy couch is a thing in Living Room. Instead of taking the couch, say "It's awfully large and heavy." Instead of pushing the couch: say "With a bit of effort, you manage to move the couch over a few feet, revealing a small metal box."; now the metal box is in Living Room. a tattered journal is a journal in the metal box. Instead of examining the journal for the first time, say "Week 1: This looks like a good enough place to lay low for a few days, or as long as it takes until the cops get bored of looking for me. Shouldn't be too long, I didn't hurt the guy too badly. I just wanted to talk to him anyway, it's his fault he made me angry!" Instead of examining the journal for the second time, say "Week 2: I keep hearing noises upstairs. I've checked it out a few times, but I never find anything. I've started sleeping on this couch downstairs--It's a little dangerous (someone might see me through the window) but the second floor is starting to give me the creeps. I don't go up there much anymore." Instead of examining the journal for the third time, say "Week 3: My brain's been feeling kinda... fuzzy, lately. I can't think straight. I swear those noises are getting louder. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to a crash upstairs. But it can't be real. There's no one up there. I must be going crazy from being cooped up so long..." Instead of examining the journal for the fourth time: say "I don't know how long I've been here anymore, Noises are getting louder, Haven't slept in days, I can hear him walking around laughing at me whoever's upstairs I can't take this anymore I'm going up to find him and-- (The rest of the entry is a mess of scrawled letters and symbols.)"; now the tattered journal is read. The description of the journal is "That's the last entry." The bookcase is scenery in Living Room. The description of bookcase is "An old wooden book shelf. Like most everything in this place, it's covered in dust." The fireplace is scenery in Living Room. The description of fireplace is "The empty fireplace gives you an unsettling feeling. It almost seems to be an open mouth, waiting for some helpless outsider to fall in. You shake your head and tell yourself to focus. This place is creepy, but you can't let it get to you." The carpet is scenery in Living Room. Upstairs Hallway is a dark room. It is up of Foyer. Before going up from the Foyer: if tattered journal is unread: say "Protocol dictates that you should check the first floor before going upstairs."; stop the action.
