[INTRODUCTION] When play begins: say “The cold rain weighs you down as you walk towards the dark wood door. The rest of the house has been obscured by the darkness and rain. Around the door is a brick wall. Above the porch is a small black overhang. The pathway is lined with thick bushes. You cautiously climb up the stairs. [paragraph break] The door looms above and you pick up the heavy knocker with both hands. As the knocker slams against the door, it creaks open, showing a brightly lit room. You call out, hoping to ask for a place to wait out the storm, hearing no response, you step inside. [paragraph break] A sudden gust of wind blows the door closed behind you and the lock slides into place. Maybe it’s time to find someone who lives here or get out.” The Foyer is a room. [FOYER] The Foyer is a room. The description is “The foyer has high arched ceilings and dark hardwood floors. The walls are lined with candles. Behind you is the front door, next to the door is a coat rack on it hangs a large black cloak and an umbrella. On the opposite wall, there is a large portrait of a man. To the west, there is a doorway leading to a stairway going down. To the north, below the painting, there is a closed oak door. To the east, there is a wide doorway leading to a room where you can see a long table and chairs.” The Candle is in the Foyer. The Candle is an object. The description of the Umbrella is “It is a fairly normal umbrella with a black cane-like handle.” The Cloak is in the Foyer. The Cloak is an object. The description of the Cloak is “It is soft and dry to the touch. Made with high-quality silk, flowing down to the floor.” Instead of taking the Cloak: say “That’s quite rude, it’s best to not anger whoever lives here.” The Painting is in the Foyer. The Painting is an object. The Painting is fixed in place. The description of the Painting is “It is a large oil painting above the doorway, with an ornate gold frame. The man in the painting has a thin face with harsh cheekbones. His expression is hauntingly empty and the eyes seem to move when you glance away.” Understand “Portrait” as Painting. The Front Door is a door. The Front Door is south of the Foyer. The Front Door is north of the Porch. The Front Door is closed and locked. The Front Door is unlocked by the Gold Key. The description of the Front Door is “It’s a grand, dark oak door. There are locks on the inside but also a keyhole. It seems like it's been locked from the inside but also the outside.” After unlocking the Front door with the Gold Key: say “As you rush towards the door you hear a voice from behind, it must be the woman. [paragraph break] ‘Aw, leaving us so soon?’ She giggles. [paragraph break] You fumble to grab the key from your pocket. The lock clicks open. [paragraph break] ‘You got lucky, I’ll give that to you.’ You turn around and see her smiling as you open the door. [paragraph break] Once you step outside, you see the sun coming up. The rain has calmed to a gentle mist. You breathe out and begin walking hastily back down the path. The door slams behind you. When you reach the bottom you turn around and see a silhouette through the curtains. [paragraph break] In the light, you can find you way easier. As you arrive home, the haze of the night has lifted and the events feel more like a dream. Your sister sees you from the garden. [paragraph break] ‘Hello, I’m sorry I'm late.’ [paragraph break] She drops her tools and runs to you ‘Where have you been? It’s been days.’ [paragraph break] You realize that you don’t know what you’ve been doing, you don’t even remember where you were. The memories have faded to nothing, but the feelings are there. A tall window obscured by velvety red curtains stands across from you. To the left, there is a dark wooden desk and chair. To the right, there are bookshelves filled with books from floor to ceiling. A small, brown book is sticking out much further than the rest.” The Bookshelf is in the Study. The Bookshelf is an object. The Bookshelf is fixed in place. The description of the Bookshelf is “There are dark oak bookshelves covering the wall. The bookshelves are lined with old, leather-bound books.” Understand “Shelf” as Bookshelf. The Book is in the Study. The Book is an object. The description of the Book is “It is a pocket-sized book, with a tattered brown cover. It's just barely out of reach.” Understand “Riddle” and “Message” as Book. Instead of taking the Book when the player does not have the Armchair: say “You try to reach it but it’s still too high up.” After taking the Book: say “You pull the armchair over and step up. Now you can easily grab the book. [paragraph break] The book is monogrammed with the letters PD. Inside, it has pages full of names and addresses. [paragraph break] As you flip through, you notice a page with a few lines written sideways along the margins. The short message scribbled on it reads, ‘Go to where bread rises and water bubbles’.” The Desk is in the Study. The Desk is an object. The Desk is fixed in place. The description of the Desk is “It's a grand, wooden desk. There are very few papers on the top and most of the space is taken up by the stacks of books. One book is flipped to a yellowed page with diagrams of plants and captions in Latin. It seems innocuous.” The Armchair is in the Study. The Armchair is an object. The description of the Armchair is “It is a fairly regular chair. The seat and back are both made of black leather. It’s well used but not broken or ripped.” The Window is in the Study. The Window is an object. The Window is fixed in place. The description of the Window is “The window is masked by heavy red, velvet curtains. They move stiffly, revealing a large window with dust on the sill. It has been long-nailed shut.” [STAIRWAY] The Stairway is a room. The Stairway is west of the Foyer. The Stairway is above the Bedroom. The description of the Stairway is “The ornate wooden handrails lead downstairs. The stairs are made of dark wood, with a red carpet, down the center of the stairs.” [BEDROOM] The Bedroom is a room. The Bedroom is below the Stairway. The description of the Bedroom is “As you walk down the stairs you see the room open up into a large room. Before going any further you call out, asking for help as well as trying to explain your intrusion. A tall canopy bed is on display as soon as you walk in. A thin fabric is creating a veil over the bed. There could be someone in there, but there's no way to tell from where you stand. Next to the bed is a nightstand, with a small cabinet in it. The room is small and cold. A flickering candle on the nightstand is the sole light source.” The Bed is in the Bedroom. The Bed is an object. The Bed is fixed in place. The description of the Bed is “As you approach the bed you can hear something stirring. In the dim lighting, the canopy seems to shift. Looking around the folds of the curtains, you realize the bed is empty. The blankets are pulled up and softly cascading over the sides of the bed.” The Nightstand is in the Bedroom. The Nightstand is a closed openable container. The Nightstand is fixed in place. The description of the Nightstand is “It is a small cabinet table with a candle on top. The drawer is unlocked. Inside there are a few books and a large knife.” The Knife is in the Nightstand. The Knife is an object. The description of the Knife is “It's a slightly rusted hunting knife with a thick handle.” [DINING ROOM] The Dining Room is a room. The Dining Room is east of the Foyer. The description of the Dining Room is “It is a fancy room with candles lining the walls. On the northern wall of the room, there is a humble white door. [paragraph break] There is a woman sitting in an armchair by the window. She is wearing a black evening gown with her hair up in a bun, holding a wine glass. [paragraph break]The dining room has a long table in the center stretching from one end of the room to the other. There is a chair on either end and the table is full of food. There are two place settings.” The Dining Table is in the Dining Room. The Dining Table is an object. The description of the Dining Table is “The thick wooden table is covered by an embroidered cloth and 2 large gold candelabras near the center. The table has a bowl of pomegranates in the center with a cut open pomegranate beside it. There are multiple small bowls of sugars, milk, jams, and honey. A baguette and block of cheese sit on a cutting board. [paragraph break] Both ends of the table have place settings with a slice of cake.” Understand “Table” and “Dinner Table” as Dining Table. The description of the Pomegranates is “There are piles of pomegranates in a ceramic bowl. Beside the bowl are a small knife and a cut-up pomegranate. After eating the Bowl of Pomegranates: say “As you eat the pomegranate seeds, you feel your stomach begin to fill up. You feel drowsy and sit down. The woman in the corner looks at you and smiles as your surroundings fade to black. Suddenly, you feel hands on the chair behind you and a man's voice saying, ‘Well, what do we have here?’. A sharp hot, pain starts radiating from your chest. Soon everything goes quiet and cold.”; end the story saying “Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. [paragraph break] You Lose.” The Cake is in the Dining Room. The Cake is an object. The Cake is edible. The description of the Cake is “It looks delicious. There are sliced strawberries and whipped cream on top of the white cake.” Understand “Slice of Cake” and “Piece of Cake” as Cake. After eating the Cake: say “As you eat the cake, you feel your stomach begin to fill up. You feel drowsy and sit down. The woman in the corner looks at you and smiles as your surroundings fade to black. Suddenly, you feel hands on the chair behind you and a man's voice saying, ‘Well, what do we have here?’. A sharp hot, pain starts radiating from your chest. Soon everything goes quiet and cold.”; end the story saying “Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. [paragraph break] You Lose.” The Chair is in the Dining Room. The Chair is an object. The Chair is fixed in place. The description of the Chair is “There are two tall chairs. One on either end of the table. They have tall arms and the seats are upholstered with a dark blue fabric.” Understand “Chairs” as Chair. In the Dining Room there is a Woman called Woman. The description is “The woman is sitting in an armchair holding a wine glass in one hand and a book in the other. Before you enter the room she seems to hear you, pulling herself out of the book and focusing her gaze on you. [paragraph break] She stands up revealing her long black evening gown. Her hair is pulled back and she has a few deliberately placed curls hanging down. She is quite pale and resembles the man in the painting.” Talking to is an action applying to one visible thing. Understand "talk to [someone]" or “converse with [someone]” as talking to. After talking to Woman: say “‘Hello ma’am, I'm so sorry to intrude. My name is -’ [paragraph break] She cuts you off, ‘Yes, please come in. The lord will be here any minute for dinner.’ [paragraph break] ‘I couldn’t find my way home and the weather was terrible. The door opened on its own. I wasn't sure where else to go,’ you continue to explain yourself as she steps back pouring another glass of wine. [paragraph break] ‘You must be quite far off your path to make it up here. Have a drink, you can leave when the rain dies down.’ [paragraph break] You interrupt, 'I'm sorry I don't drink. My family will worry if I'm not home, I really should leave.' [paragraph break] Her tone is becoming harsh, and she continues, ‘You really must stay, I can’t let you go out in this weather.’” Understand “stab [someone]” or “attack [someone]” as attacking. After attacking Woman: say “You approach her and grab a knife off the dining table. She senses you and turns towards you. [paragraph break] ‘Don’t be so stupid.’ she sneers. [paragraph break] She rushes forward and suddenly you fall to the ground. [paragraph break] You hear a man's voice say ‘I hope you saved some fun for me.’ [paragraph break] The man and woman laugh. An intense pressure begins in your chest and chills go through your body. Everything begins closing in until it all goes dark.”; end the game saying “Maybe that wasn’t such a good idea. [paragraph break] You Lose.” [KITCHEN] The Kitchen is a room. The Kitchen is north of the Dining Room. The description of the Kitchen is “As you walk through the door the stench of bleach becomes overwhelming. The floor and countertops tiles are shockingly white. As you look around you see the clear lack of food and pots and pans that are barely used. [paragraph break] In front of you is a refrigerator, a sink and a rack of pots and pans. To the left of the fridge is a small wood stove.” The Refrigerator is in the Kitchen. The Refrigerator is a closed openable container. The Refrigerator is fixed in place. The description of the Refrigerator is “The fridge door is white and the handle is silver. I wonder what’s inside.” Understand “Fridge” as Refrigerator. The Bowl of Fruit is in the Refrigerator. The Bowl of Fruit is an object. The Bowl of Fruit is edible. The description of the Bowl of Fruit is “There are various apples, peaches, and grapes.” Understand “Fruit” or “Fruits” as Bowl of Fruit. It’s raw and has been left uncovered.” Understand “Meat” as Slab of Meat. Instead of eating the Slab of Meat: say “Surely you can’t be hungry enough to eat that.” The Wood Stove is in the Kitchen. The description of the Gold Key is “It is a large key with small carvings of flowers on the handle. The key is caked in ash.
