When play begins, say "This is another quick demonstration of a common situation. Here, you have one thing, picking up a brick, that is only possible if another thing, examining the brick, has already happened." The office is a room. The brick and the knife are in the office. The brick can be explored or unexplored. The brick is unexplored. [Here I'm just creating a new property, "unexplored." I think this could be called whatever you feel like -- whatever will help you remember it, so long as you're consistent.] After examining the brick, now the brick is explored. [This attaches that property to an existing action, "examining the brick".] Instead of taking the brick while the brick is unexplored, say "look closely first." [This is a double negative. It means that when I examine the brick, that will reset it's property to "explored", and then the "taking the brick" action can proceed.]
